I got into an arguement with someone last night over communism. I argued that communism never works, and countries that practice it end up poor and in many cases have famines and mass murder. This persons said I was brainwashed by western education, and that communism was invented before Karl Marx. He said that parts of communism was found in Ancient Greece, which proves that communism has worked and can work again.

This seem wrong to me since communism is largely based around the industrial working class, which Ancient Greece did not have. Am I in the wrong here? Was parts of communism enacted in Ancient Greece?

You're definitely brainwashed by cold-era propaganda, Anon. Communism is about bringing a worldwide classless and stateless society. It cannot happen in a single country and the USSR/China/Cuba etc. all were totalitarian states when the revolution got hijacked by assholes.

Pic related are countries where the CIA had to intervene most often to stop democratically elected communists through coups.

The idea of socialism letting workers own the result of their work, instead of having very few individuals hoard all the wealth and distribute crumbs. It's democracy applied to the economy, nothing more, nothing less. Ancient societies/tribes therefore were socialist up to a certain point when men started to divide power in a way linked to industralization (fordism for instance).

So I'd say you got it the other way around, industrialization brought today's capitalism to the world, with all its consequences.

There is nothing wrong with western education. In fact i'd rather be "brainwashed' by western education than enjoy beauties of freethinking found in Russia or China.

That's like saying that the divine right of kings never existed, because no monarch ever governed according to God's will.

Or that the failure of absolutism is entirely the fault of the Freemasonry that intervened to depose despotic monarchs.

That's like saying democracy is bad because you have countries called Democratic Republic of Congo that are shitholes.

Spartans somewhat resembled some communist doctrines as Lycurgus, the father of their constitution and most important statesmen, institute land-ownership reformed that divided land-lots among citizens, posed laws against opulent materialism and pleasures, crafted laws so Sparta was a collective society and, restricted conventional trading and coinage among the citizen class; which sort of influenced Communist ideology, chiefly in the manner of taking over the private estates and dividing them among the citizenry. But Sparta was also ironically opposite of communism if you viewed their State from the perspective of all inhabitants they ruled over, not just their citizens, and government structure. Actual full-citizen Spartans were a small restricted class that later became limited as being aristocrats in their society during their prime. They conquered nearby towns and cities and subjugated their people into helots, which were their peasants. Most of the freed citizens didn't have the same rights or protection as the full-citizenship Spartan citizens had, and couldn't hold office. Sparta also had an elder council (Ephors) and a Monarchy, which goes against communism.

Athens had some social-welfare programs in place by providing citizens with free education and giving allowances to the poor if they were at war and their occupations were negatively-affected. But yet again, they weren't communist and the system thrived off exploiting a mass of slaves and resident aliens for their capital.

The most relevant stake Communist can claim about anything Greek resembling Communism would be Plato's ideal Republic, which was unrealistically idealistic and Plato accepted it as such by writing his far more pragmatic "Laws" which was a much more watered-down version of his ideal State in his 'Republic' that was more crafted to the conventions of his time, with fitting elements of Sparta and Athens together in the same state.
