Why has Federalism tended to fail in the Americas besides the United States? The FRCA was a shit show. Gran Colombia was a tremendous mistake. What went wrong?

Mexico is actually a Federal State.

North America was colonized by enlighenment era British, South America was colonized by medieval era Spaniards.
The geography of South America created cultural distinctions and communication difficult. In the case of the FRCA, there were cultural differences long before independence from Spain.

It didn't really fail. Most Latin Americans live in federal republics.
The bad thing about federal republics in the third world is that the wealth disparity among different regions is much greater than what you can find in the first world. Think south Brazil vs North Brazil. So it makes sense for wealthy states/provinces to want to secede.
IIRC the State of Sao Paulo keeps only 10 percent of the taxes collected there, the rest is distributed among the poor States.

Jokes on him. Argentina is a federal republic, Uruguay unitary.

A lot of other countries are too small.
U.S. was originally a multi-state coalition.
