Financial problem (Crown ran out of money due to irresponsible spending) became a financial problem (only a complete tax reform could save them) became a political problem (a tax reform would would be impossible without removing the entrenched privileges of the clergy and nobility, who really didn't like that idea).

The actual revolution part with the bastille came after the Estates General (representatives from the whole country called together to solve important issues) ended up solving nothing because the king was a naturally poor leader who was feeling particularly dead inside due to his son dying miserably for no reason. At the EG all of the non-clergy and non-nobility representatives along with certain idealists among the nobility and clergy declared themselves the true National Assembly that represented the interests of the French people. Upon hearing this King Louis supposedly said 'fuck it' and just left them to do whatever. Eventually the people of Paris, who thought this political news was the most exciting shit ever, got it into their heads (largely due to a speech made by a friend of Robespierre's) that the king was going to shut the National Assembly down (not an groundless fear), and so they stormed the bastille.

And then after this the Paris Mob realized that they could get whatever they wanted by rallying together and killing shit, and that attitude is how you explain everything that happened for the next several years in France.

And yes, it was a pretty awful event. It was the birth of the modern-era, and what a shit era this has turned out to be. Robespierre should have been allowed to keep purging.

Danton really was corrupt and likely would have guillotined Robespierre and his faction, had Robespierre not made the first move. After the threat of invasion had been removed, Robespierre must have known he and his faction were in an increasingly vulnerable position.

He never tried to flee the country. He wanted to flee Paris, where he (and his wife, children, and siblings) were being terrorized and threatened with mob violence when he tried to exercise his by-the-people-given-rights to move about freely, exercise his own opinions, and use his veto.

One of the reasons why the flight to Montmedy failed is that Louis refused to take the quicker route which would have taken them over the border for half an hour, because he didn't want to appear to be leaving France.

He asked for the support of other monarchies when he was getting death threats and he could no longer act of his own free will.

Louis was ruler of all of France but the situation he fled from was the most extreme people of Paris dictating how the entire country should be handled. A king should be accountable for his actions but an angry mob waiting to take your head off the moment they're dissatisfied is a bad work environment.
