Why is France so aesthetic compared to England?
Is it to do with Protestantism?
Climate, mostly.
>>1933116
It has to do with the fact French are superior in every way. France is possibly the most aesthetic country in earth, it helps that they were very populous during most of history thus have a lot of towns. It also had a lot of cultures under its borders which lead to a great deal of diversity in aesthetics.

Industrial cities were shit cities but they made a pretty penny, nationally.
French industry in the early to mid 19th century was worth quite a bit taken as a whole, but only because France is super big. Individually, french workshops were stupidly inefficient. But the cities were nice enough. No Manchester's.
Italy has the best aesthetics

But they did. The Kings wanted to centralized the country, and tried their hardest, but they were either too incompetent or faced too much opposition to do it.
The Jacobins had the advantage of being smarter and having a free pass to do anything they wanted because of "muh revolution", so they finished the job the monarchs began.
Such revolution.

Huge territory with varying climates and lots of different cultures and influences. For european standards of course.
Also France used to be the most popoulous region for most of the pre-industrial era.
On the other side, France mantained a strong agricultural sector during industrilation with a low birth rates.
The low birth rates and relatively slow urbanization made it possible for bigger cities to be spared from the industrial commie blocks.
Meanwhile the many rural peasants maintained the historical comfy villages.
Also the French public and politics have always been very cautious about city planning and preserving the esthetics.

France and England both have great bits, architecturally, culturally and naturally. If you want chocolate box images of both, follow the money. The haute bourgeoisie love socially cleansed chocolate box aesthetics where there are no lumpen proles wearing polyester to ruin their genteel urban or rural idyll.
It just happens that the British haute bourgeoisie tend to prefer soulless but pretty commuter villages with no post office or pub to ruin the vibe, whereas the French haute bourgeoisie tend to prefer soulless but pretty town centres, with lots of boutiques and markets so they can play at being urban sophisticates, like Marie Antoinette playing at being a milk maid.
>>1934964
most of the comfy places in France posted here, are tiny villages which are located in the most isolated and poorest regions of France
>>1934966
And there are plenty of equivalent English places. However there are proportionately fewer due to the English preference for rural idylls - that's a cultural phenomenon. The English sentimentalise the countryside and over regulate it in a similar way that the French do their town centres.
>>1934802
Yep, pretty much.
Countryside towns are lovely, but cities and the towns on their outskirts are terrible. I live in a town that used to be a big holiday spot in england until airtravel, and it's depressing.

I don't think there's really any debating that European cities are on usually vastly more aesthetically pleasing than American ones. I've been able to travel to a handful of European countries and what always strikes me is that everything there looks like it was crafted and molded by hand and put together with a great deal of care for the way it would look. Urban areas are also a lot more pleasant because they were clearly designed with pedestrians in mind. Things are set up to be convenient to walk from place to place. In America, everything is very young and virtually all our cities are post-industrial and sprang up not as population centers per se, but as business opportunities. Cheaper, easier modern construction methods meant lower cost of opening a new store or factory or housing development, but that in turn meant simpler, uglier buildings covered in big signs. It also doesn't help that the advent of the car enabled a horrifying degree of sprawl that makes everything outside of a handful of east coast cities virtually impossible to navigate by foot.
Honestly I wish we would just tear most of this ugly shit down and go for higher density, intentionally beautiful, pedestrian-friendly cities. America has some genuinely lovely little towns that are nearly on par with their European counterparts, but our cities are just depressing.

I went to Paris about 13 years ago on vacation and I was expecting the worst. Parisians had a terrible reputation and the Iraq war had just begun, which was a pretty low point for Franco-American relations. However, I was pleasantly surprised by many of the native Parisians. They tended to be helpful and perfectly happy to converse with me in English after I gave French my best shot and usually failed since I had never studied it. Apart from the occasional gypsy trying to steal stuff and Africans trying to sell me trinkets anytime I went near a tourist site, I enjoyed the people there.

And the tradition of wooden buildings in Europe dates back literally to the stone age.
The Normannic style of wooden buildings is noticeably different to the Alemmanic timber frame buildings.

Alot of places in Cornwall and occasionally the South East are very beautiful.

Only in cozy village
I'm lucky my mom inherited a house there
In bigger cities, some parts can be nice with cozy architecture (although not as comfy as villages) but some parts are fucking awful with depressing commiblocks

No, we have murders, rapes, modernists and refugees. It's not a fairytale, but it's obvisiously better than living in the rest of the world.

Of all cities in Germany...
But I think /his is onto something here. The Brits seem to have a kind of penis-envy when it comes to architecture. In India and China, they're blowing up cities and palaces, in Europe, and especially in the extraordinary gifted Germany in terms of historical old towns, they're destroying everything even remotely appealing. One may as well recall the bombing of Copenhagen...

>Of all cities in Germany...
What does that have to do with how the gatehouse looks?
That's what I love about Germany, they're the only ones who've kept their architecture fully intact. Yeah there's parts here and there in England and France dating back to the Medieval ages but there's whole communities, towns, and even cities in Germany where its like another world.
Here is a famous example but even then people confused the city with being Austrian, ha! Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was filmed in Nordlingen
>>1965366
>What does that have to do with how the gatehouse looks?
Because the city the gatehouse belongs doesn't quite hold up to the aesthetic qualities it promises.
>That's what I love about Germany, they're the only ones who've kept their architecture fully intact. Yeah there's parts here and there in England and France dating back to the Medieval ages but there's whole communities, towns, and even cities in Germany where its like another world.
As much as I love my country, but that's just not the case. In the last decades, much damage has been done to our cultural heritage. There are plenty of comfy towns in Germany, but that's only a fraction of what today could still be around you know.
However Germany lacks larger cities with intact historical city centres. There is nothing like a Paris, Bordeaux, Florence, Venice or Barcelona in Germany. Anymore.
>>1933116
Poor urban planning in England?

>That's what I love about Germany, they're the only ones who've kept their architecture fully intact. Yeah there's parts here and there in England and France dating back to the Medieval ages but there's whole communities, towns, and even cities in Germany where its like another world.
If you like Germany in this regard, you'll absolutely love Italy, it blows Germany out of the water.
>>1965408
>However Germany lacks larger cities with intact historical city centres.
But that's not your fault though, the English love destroying other peoples shit and making the world ugly. The biggest city in Germany that has rebuild quite nicely is Dresden and Frankfurt is reconstructing its Altstadt right now so there's still hope.

Yes I love Italy too. Florence is one of my favorite cities I've never been too but the culture and history there is one of my favorites to read. Then there's the towns like San Gimignano,
Civita di Bagnoregio, Palmanova which are amazing but tbqh i'm more inclined to German aesthetic. Italy is a close favorite but my heart lies with Germany desu.

As an Englishman I absolutely agree. England was completely wrecked by careless post-war developments. I used to live in Exeter, the city was absolutely gutted and all of its historical heritage trashed to service some ugly as fuck concrete buildings in the centre and a fucking duel carriageway.
My mum is French and she told me that the first time she came to England she noticed how ugly the buildings and streets were.

French comfort - go outside. So there is pretty shit outside.
English comfort - stay inside. So there is pretty shit inside.
Its culture, formed by rainy weather.
Don't think you've been to modern France op.
>have to deal with the French (imo rudest and least pleasant of all Europeans, Danes and Dutch were super friendly)

>south is a shit hole, streets are dirty, would see people piss and shit in public
>rural France is nice but I'd say no better than most of rural Europe
Italy is way more aesthetic, cities are beautiful and rural areas are picturesque af. Also way less refugees to try and rob you.

I have had the fortune of being able to live and travel in different places across the US, growing up and being in school, and I still hold true that North America is an absolutely beautiful place. I think that it is different, but equal to the aesthetic standard set by France and Britain, and American cities have a lot of room to grow and change over the years. I have been to England and Scotland, but I still have a great craving to see France, both city and countryside, as well as the rest of Europe someday.
However, one thing that I will always, ALWAYS, have pride in and have a fixation over is how utterly vast and diverse our geography is in the USA. The only country that rivals us is China as far as landmass and geologic/environmental diversity. I am eager to one day travel to the East and look and learn about their cities and countryside.
That being said, to all the disheartened Americans in the thread that feel as if we don't have anything to offer architecturally in our cities, I encourage you to get out and explore more of your country before you go off to Europe. I grew up in a relatively rural area in Appalachia, (which is beautiful in it's own right) and I ended up in Manhattan after school. While I have gotten used to the urban charm of NYC, I was also enamored with the mountains out west when I went to Zion. There is so much out there than cul-de-sacs and strip malls, and always judge cities by as many variables as possible. Love your home even if it changes, anons, and be joyous that you get to see more of the world when/if it happens.

Frenchness is not an ethnicity. It is a brotherhood. Despite not being purely descended from Franks or Gauls people like Napoleon or Alexandre Dumas are just as French as any other.
