Enlightenment ideals and liberal values, individualism, emphasis on choice, culture of scepticism and empiricism, materialism, lack of shame/honour as a control system, egalitarianism, influence of European philosophy and political science.

Yep. The reason they look so stupid to us, and the reason a lot of Japanese media seems so childish and innocent to us is because they are not going through the same post-modern phase as us. Their culture looks so stupid and childish to us because we are cynical westerners and we find it hard to believe that people are actually that sincere and genuine about what they wear. To look "cool" in the west you have to look like you're doing it accidentally, ironically or effortlessly. You can't be sincere about it.

There's no way that a Westerner would wear shit like that unless he was being ironic and he'd probably go out of his way to show that he's "self-aware" and that he doesn't actually think it looks good. For a nip those clothes would be not necessarily normal, but conceivable.

In the west we're used to people telling us to be more creative and "think outside the box" so by our standards dressing outlandishly is seen as a very superficial, high school-grade means of self-expression, where nips don't have that luxury (having worn a uniform throughout their school years) so dressing like that is much more of a statement for them than it is to us.

Hindu yes, though it'll be years before they're powerful enough. Islam is dead. It was always the poorer child of Greco-Roman civilisation and has nothing to offer besides repeating the failures of western civilisation.
