I don't come here so often, and i'm sure this thread has been here before, so in advance i apologize
But, at what point did the western roman empire fuck up beyond the point of no return? The division of the empire? The transfer of all military power into the hands of the generals? (Stillicho, Alaric)
The Romans handled massive migrations before, so i don't buy into the theory that the collapse was inevitable because of Vandals/Huns/Goths
The germanic tribes were especially problematic + constant internal conflicts. I'm neither an expert on this so someone correct me if i was wrong.

Crisis of the 3rd century
The Battle of Adrianople solidified the fall of Roman authority and allowed the migrating Gothic and Germanic tribes to enter Roman territory with their strength and identity in check, whereas previously they would have been pummeled by the Roman military, forced to submit and then spread out to settle territory and become tax paying citizens.
Stillicho and Flavius Aetius, despite their Germanic ancestry, were competent leaders and could have perhaps stabilized the empire long enough to last through the crisis, letting it survive in some form, but their murders and the rise of Ricimer sealed the empire's fate.
