I think it's about interests.
If you find something interesting during your primary and secondary education, you'll want to learn more about it. And at best if you're not interested you'll remember something from classes.
I remember a fair bit of biology and chemistry, but not enough to discuss them (i know and care less about chemistry tho).
A problem with modern education systems is they rarely incentivize you to learn rather than study. Studying is boring, learning is enjoyable.

Anyway i'd say only total normies would have a black hole regarding what they were taught, especially about Europe's important and darkest moments. And most people who cared to give a damn would at least have heard about A-H.
