Dmitri wasn't just some random dude who pretended to be Tsar's lost heir. He actually did look very much like real Dmitri to the point that people who knew the real prince recognized him. He also had some knowledge about Russia's court life and noble families. Not much, but sufficiently enough to confirm that he spent at least some time as a child at the court in Moscow.

Nope, Polish king pussied out of a project to make his son the Tsar. To be fair, the king was most likely right, the Polish prince would most likely be murdered very quickly.
