It's cultural, for instance Spaniards keep both their mother's and father's names, Icelandic women are named after their mothers while Icelandic men are named after their fathers, etc etc.

Because in the past there was no way to prove that the mother's offspring was actually the supposed father's child. So if the married man actually did get biologically cucked out of his progeny, at least the kid would bear his name.
