That depends entirely on whether or not Japan was considered part of the Axis at that time.

I generally wrap it into the second world war once 1941 rolls around, since that's the point when the western allies ended up at war with Japan.

By 1940-41 it was part of WWII. Under the theater CBI (China-Burma-India)

Definitely related to World War 2 in a major way. Not necessarily a part of it, but undoubtedly had an impact on how WW2 played out.
