Apologies for the basic question but I need to understand this. Were there ANY redeeming features (victories, notable wins in battles etc) in WW2-era Italy or were they absolutely 100% retards of the highest level? I hear about them being an absolute joke but surely they must have done some things right.

All I know about them is the tried to invade Greece early on and failed fucking hard, dragging it on most of the war
Meanwhile Germany conquered Poland and France in 5 minutes
>>1897748
They held Ethiopia for a while
They took sidi baranni
The advance into italy was slow and grueling for the allies
They never did a french-tier instantly surrender and heavily collaborate thing.

The italian army wasnt motorized, it's generals had learnt nothing from the successes of the germans, it had contracted FIAT to produce tanks and those tanks were awful, it did not have any resources of its own but relied on it's colonies, the british controlled both chokepoints into the mediteranean, the italian artillery and arms were all from the great war, it's ammunition was outdated and weak, it had roughly 150 modern airplanes when it entered the war, it had a highly conservative grand marshall who said of the german reports on mechanized warfare "we'll read it after the war", it had no aircraft carriers, it did not impose a war economy like the other nations, it did not sieze Malta straight away and their only real power was in their surface fleet which the british caught napping at Taranto pretty much straight away.

It also had no oil besides what Germany gifted to it to keep people fed.

They sank 2british battleships that cost a trillion moneys with one pedal boat that costed 20 bucks + tip at Walmart.
Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves.

No battleships were sunk.

Last successful cavalry charge in history.

>>1897799
The advance into italy was slow and gruelling because of german troops and equipment. The italian army was a fucking joke, they surrendered in droves.
>>1899359
The Italians were much like the Russians.
They weren't nearly as much of a joke if they were fighting in their own country.
>>1899369
Not him, but the Facist government had already been deposed by the time the Americans landed in Italy, the Italian army had stood down, and the Axis forces in Italy were overwhelmingly German supplemented by roughly 1/6 of their number in Italian deserters.
The Italians didn't fight up the peninsula, the only bit they actually fought for was Sicily.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge_of_the_Savoia_Cavalleria_at_Isbuscenskij
The last successful cavalry charge in history where the Italians were outnumbered by Soviets of more than 3 to 1. Full on frontal assault cavalry charge where they captured or killed almost every single one of the enemies.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Alexandria_(1941)
Italian frogmen in the Raid on Alexandria took out 2 battleships, one destroyer, and one tanker with just three human torpedoes in one of the most successful raids of the war and basically inventing navy seals.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Arbuzovka
On the Eastern Front the Italians, through sheer force, bravery, and aggression managed to punch and break through a full Soviet encirclement in one of the bravest acts of the war.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kasserine_Pass
Most of the fighting men in Kasserine pass on the Axis side were Italians. Rommel famously held the Italian Bersaglieri soldier in higher regard than he did even the German soldier.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_guerrilla_war_in_Ethiopia
7,000 Italians led by the legendary Amedeo Guillet held out against tens of thousands of British troops in East Africa after the Italian regime fell. They ultimately lost but the scope and nature of their ability to hold out in a guerilla war was superseded only by the likes of men like Vorbek.
It is important to remember that the Italian underperformance on a grand scale was solely due to the general nepotism and economic underperformance that penetrated all levels of the Italian government.
When it came to the Italian fighting man they were regarded is ridiculously brave by almost everyone that fought them, and often times they fought completely to the last man.
To say that Italy had horrible officers partly true because promotion wasnt meritocratic. However, treating the average italian fighting man as a coward, when they fought ridiculous odds, is silly
