They kind of screwed my chances at success as an adult, but kid me wasn't aware of this. I was just aware of getting to play video games all day. Seemed like a sweet deal then.

For a general overview of various topics, the Oxford Illustrated History series is pretty good.

Just go to your next bookstore, look threw the books in the history departement and take what ever seems appealing to you. I personally think that there isn't the one book which is the "right" solution to start with history

Personally, I know this isn't that great, but I learned a lot of history by playing scenarios in Europa Universalis 4. Like the 1453 Ottoman taking of Constantinople. The 30 years war. The war of Spanish succession and then the Napoleonic wars.

Then I just found books for those time periods.

Oh and get a book on the first crusade, its rather interesting how they pulled it off.

Oh yeah and I read a book on the 4th Crusade which was also very interesting, but don't know what I did with that book.

/his/ will hate me for this but i think the best thing for a person in your situation to do is to try to get a copy of what your local high school uses for world history. One of those "from ancient to modern history" books they use. Read it cover to cover and then explore whatever eras you find the most interesting on your own by getting books specifically for those eras.

So what do you know as a basic starter? Like what do you know that interests you? The best way to learn history, IMO, is to find something that interests you and learn about it as much as you can.
