In Aristotle's work, "catharsis" (purgation) is about giving the passions an outlet. In Orthodoxy, catharsis means conquering the passions, instead of appeasing them. Only then can the true you be found, for before then, you are not a unified will, thought or desire, but a sea and manifold of wills, thoughts and desires, all in dissonance and struggling with no cohesion against each other.

No, holy desire is serene pursuit of desire. When you fixate absolutely on God, the pursuit of the enormous desire is expressed, apart from contrition, in a very serene manner. There is rigorous fasting and prostrations and many hours of silent prayer, but all the while you maintain serenity. This is why icons are, apart from conditions of mourning, shown to be serene instead of passionate. It's not like Protestantism where you express hymns with a lot of passion, hymns are not to be sung loud (which according to Saint John Chrysostom, is obnoxious, you don't beg a human being by being loud, so don't beg God that way either).
