Has science ever really taken such a serious hit that even scientists themselves questioned their legitimacy?

The Holocaust. Whenever you get into an argument with a redditor/dawkins fanshit just mention racialism and the holocaust and watch them implode

Yes, see:

Science is built to flexible: look at the world, make some observations, test, make predictions, repeat. If a foundational theory is found to be wrong, the problem is not with science, the problem is with the observation or prediction that was made, or the test performed. It's what scientific rigor is all about.

Science isn't any faith-based system: you are entirely free to perform any experiment yourself and see if your results agree with the prevailing scientific consensus. That's what peer review is for. Maybe you'll find something new; that's what Nobel prizes are for.

People misunderstand evolution all the time. The social darwinists, for example, or people who think homosexuality must be against it somehow. Why would bringing it up be a problem?
>>
>>1886476

Because arguing with those kinds of people make you lose faith in humanity
>>
So why is /his/ so against science? Explain to me why subjectivity matters
>>
>>1886480
No, I'm saying I am one of those people and I don't see why bringing it up would be an issue.

There's a meme in society of some kind of entrepreneurial post-capitalist industrial-scientific "productivity" thing, and they are expressing the meme because they are demi-conscious memebuoys floating on a slurry sea of currents you can only see if you zoom out.

It's exhausting even trying to give an answer to this question. You need to like phenomenologically bracket every single word and write a book explaining that they aren't even people. They aren't even conscious. They aren't even having "opinions". STEM people are like robots with human skin stretched over them. To say "they are dismissive of the humanities" is implicitly to admit I think there's a "they". STEM people don't even fucking exist. They are a statistical gaseous nebula of random particles wafting across continents and periodically expressing junk they picked up along the way. Why would you even talk to them?

Talking to a STEMfag is literally like being some kind of Buddha, ascending reality, then coming back down and talking to bees who were dudes in past lives. I'm sure these bee niggas can be saved or whatever, but let's just wait until they're back in human form. Don't walk around going "BEES, STOP BUZZING, PUT DOWN THAT POLLEN, LISTEN TO ME ABOUT HOW EVERY CONCEPTUAL CATEGORY YOU HAVE FOR EVEN THINKING OF THINGS WAS SHAPED FOR YOU BY AN UNCONSCIOUS SLUDGE OF MEMETIC POLYALLOY THAT FLOWS IN PREDICTABLE CURRENTS FROM YEAR TO YEAR THROUGH THE HIVE IN WHICH YOU WERE CONCEIVED"
>>
>>1886480
>le faith in humanity: lost xD
I think you are the redditor

>why does the very thing I fundamentally am matter

the more accurate question OP is about the school of logic.

The sickness in science is logical positivism.

Once you nip that in the bud, you won't have such a bias towards logic and other schools of thought would find more legitimacy so that they may answer questions that a scientist may not.

It's more individual and/or collective faith in the ability of science to solve problems that gets shaken from time to time.

It's understandable that as religion falls away people will turn to other sources to answer the uncertainties of their existence. I just think it's kinda dumb to go balls deep into atheism and look at science as the only source of the answers, even for a non-religious person that seems like you're locking yourself out of a lot of components that create a meaningful existence.

>this is what creationists actually believe
>>
>>1886816
Im not a creationist but dawkins acts as if the scientific method is the best shit ever and yet you had up to 150 years of racial science culminate in killing off slavs jews and disabled people.
>>
>>1886839
If you're going to associate the Holocaust with science it makes more sense to focus on the technology that allowed for such large-scale extermination. Hitler's aims didn't have shit to do with any legitimate biology and German anti-semitism went back a lot longer than 150 years.
>>
They're called paradigm shifts. Here's a nice a list from Wikipedia:

- 1543 - The transition in cosmology from a Ptolemaic cosmology to a Copernican one.
- 1687 - The transition in mechanics from Aristotelian mechanics to classical mechanics.
- 1783 - The acceptance of Lavoisier's theory of chemical reactions and combustion in place of phlogiston theory, known as the chemical revolution.
- 1866 - The acceptance of Mendelian inheritance, as opposed to pangenesis in the early 20th century.
- 1905 - The development of quantum mechanics, which replaced classical mechanics at microscopic scales.
- 1965 - The acceptance of plate tectonics as the explanation for large-scale geologic changes.

Science is constantly refining itself. It's anyone's guess what will happen next.

What questions can't science answer?
Meaningful ones I mean
>>
>>1886418
if it's a serious science the basis and the foundation of it have and MUST be questioned always
>>
>>1886470
>that's what Nobel prizes are for
At their inception maybe.
>>
>>1886839
>150 years of racial science
That wasn't science it was a mix of shitty philosophy and cherry picked, distorted ideas that may or may not have been scientific. The word pseudoscience exists to describe exactly this. That racial "science" is on the same level as the same used African Americans in the Jim Crow era/slaves, phrenology and flat earth theory
>>
>>1886418
Science is literally built on questioning existing paradigms you clueless, uneducated sperg. Go read some epistemology instead of basing your impressions on pop culture stereotypes.
>>
>>1886555
Logical positivism hasn't been taken seriously for decades.

>>1886443
You're a perfect example of what happens when people with preconceived political motives seek to justify their conclusions by skimming "alternative" bodies of knowledge online, gathered without any kind of rigorous empirical methodology needed to wean out the influence of confirmation biases and a total lack of understanding of the problems with inductive logic. You deign yourself geniuses and insulate yourself in echo chambers, boiling over with rage against the jews/reptilians/NWO/feminists that stems from your misplaced persecution complex, and any legit contradicting evidence is dismissed by ad hominem as being one of "them". Of course you're infuriated that the consensus of society's most intelligent, educated and (most importantly) peer-reviewed circles reject your bullshit, along with creationism and New Age faggots.
