Russia was only protecting Serbia because they needed an ally in the balkans for their future invasions. Everyone knew Austro-Hungary was going toward the shitter, Russia was planning to take their piece and Serbia would be an important ally for that.

1) sets a bad precedence
2) cheapens national sovereignty
3) implicates them in aiding one side over the other

The fault wasn't with Belgium. No country can just let their sovereignty be ignored without a fight. Its a pretty quick slide from letting troops march through to occupation. Plus the whole neutrality thing.

Even Britain, in a rare move, was entirely in the right to declare war to uphold the terms of an alliance/protection agreement.
