Before the rise of the Sunni Ulema, religious leadership was still tied up in prophethood and its legitimacy over kingship. For the faction that supported Ali this extended beyond the nominal claim of the Caliph to be the elected successor to prophethood. After him things got a little crazy as the Shia became an anti-Umayyad movement that preached to various non-Arab non-Muslims throughout the Caliphate, and Ali became more and more important as a holy figure to the point where Muhammad was seen more like John the Baptist to Ali's Jesus at times.
