This might belong on /wr/ more, but what do you feel would be an interesting topic for a short paper on Nero?
>>

His vilification by Christians in later generations.

>>1877913
I will keep that in mind, thanks for the suggestion. Any other ideas?

His neckbeard

the precedent his death set for future emperors

His vilification by senatorial historiography. Read Winterlings Caligula and try to extrapolate from the primary sources which mos Nero actually broke and what the senators made of it. One could also just compare the writing about Nero and Caligula (not: do not compare the emperors).

What the fuck is /wr/?

>>1878415
>do not compare the emperors
why not, they were both top tier meme artists

Cause historical science doesn't work that way and because it's impossible to do a comprehensive comparison since you won't be able to consult all sources and all the research available. It's smarter to focus on one type of source like "senatorial historiography" and compare how both of them are compared in these sources. I named senatorial historiography because the Winterling's book is already out and as easy available as the sources required to do this.

His last days on Earth

>Nero orders Galba arrested, and declares him an enemy of the state
>Galba decides that he really should be Emperor, in that case
>One of the Praetorian guard declares that he's supporting that decision, and many of his troops follow suit.
>Nero's own bodyguards begin to drop hints that they'd like to kill him
>Terrified, Nero flees to a nearby port city and climbs onto the navy ships docked in the harbor.
>Orders them to take him somewhere safe, maybe Spain, maybe Africa
>The sailors refuse to help him, and taunt him with "Is it really such a dreadful thing to die?"
>Nero comes back to Rome and takes a moment to think
>If he threw himself at the people's feet, they'd just take him to the Senate, who'd kill him
>Asking the Senate for forgiveness would lead to his execution
>No general would stand with him
>No one will stand with him
>Tries to sleep on it

>Wakes up around midnight
>All of the guard have deserted their posts.
>All of them
>A terrified Nero races through the palace
>The halls are empty
>The rooms of his friends are empty
>Nero sinks to his knees and cries out for someone to kill him and end it
>No one
>Nero breaks down and screams "Have I neither friend nor foe?!"
>The Praetorians watching in the shadows just walk away
>slips out of the palace and steals a couple of slaves, riding out of the capital dressed as a peasant
>Hides in a farmer's villa and orders the slaves to dig a grave
>He's walking around in a stupor, tears running down his cheeks as he stares into nothingness.
>Just keeps repeating "What an artist the world is losing"
>A courier arrives. The Senate has ordered Nero to be killed on sight
>Nero decides that it's time, and tries to kill himself
>He can't even work up the nerve to do it
>Hears the sound of heavy Legion warhorses and riders coming through the night
>Steadies himself and stabs himself in the throat
>The Legionaries who find him drag him out and a trauma surgeon is brought in from the Legion to keep him alive, so Rome can extract the full extent of it's vengeance
>Nero lays in a half-dead trance for several hours, completely without anesthetic and aware of the fact that everyone around him is only keeping him alive so he can be tortured to death
>With his last bit of strength, he brings one of them close so he can whisper into his ear "Too late, this is fidelity"
>He dies soon afterwards, surrounded by apathetic Legionnaires

And this is why you shouldn't trust the primary sources literally and need to consult the research.
