We Filipinos alone have no word for sword or dagger because each Flip ethnic group was anal retentive about such things and called specific weapons by their names. Only the Spaniards taught us that "HEY GUYS, THESE BIG KNIVES ARE CALLED "ESPADAS" OK? THE SMALL ONES "CUCHILLOS." HAPPY?"
>Colonial Flips proceed to not use said terms anyway except for European weapons & kitchenware.
There was also shitloads of Indonesian influence such as Krisses and the meme Karambit considering that Empires from there had loads of influence even up here.

Weirdly enough, missile weapons were lumped in one category. In the Tagalog language, slings, dart throwers, and bows & arrows were all called "Pana." The first firearms came from Muslim & Chinese traders, but most Pre-Colonial Flips used the Malay words for them: Paltik (muskets) and Lantaka (from Malay word "Rentaka," Cannons). Most firearms were bought from Moluccas or through Japanese & Chinese pirates, who were more than happy to exchange them for a few slaves, or some natural products like pearls, tortoise shells, or some spices.

Continued: Personally I find the continued use of such weapons under Spanish Rule interdasting.

While Spanish Colonization in the Philippines started in around the 1560s, a European style Army would only emerge from the 1700s. Due to distance, a different geography, and natives familiar with steel and gunpowder, the conquistadors preferred to use local talent for much of the 1500s-1600s. Bear in mind that the Spaniards initial military efforts in the Philippines failed so they had to resort to Religion & Conversion, which worked ridiculously to their advantage as shitloads of Weak Pagan Filipinos rallied to Spanish fortified settlements with Spain's conversion for protection scheme. This meant that Spain manage to unite shitloads of Flips and became the largest polity in local archipelago politics, which Spain proceeded to use converted natives to quash powerful Muslim ones,

In any case, going back to weapons, much of native Filipino weaponry was still used under Spanish rule, with only a few european bits and pieces like some native warriors wearing a European Cuirass, or bearing European firearms and pistols. Native weapons themselves were affected, usually by adding European-style grips & guards to native weapons. In order to distinguish themselves from non-Colonized Flips, Colonial Filipino warriors donned Christian imagery or coat of arms of the distance Spanish monarch on their person. These soldiers made up majority of the early Spanish colonial military in the Philippines, with a small European-style force of below 10,000 men present in the Islands. Though these men were spread out, and didn't practice the meme pike & shot tactics as used in the European mainland. Instead, the day called for halberds, shields & swords supporting musketeers & crossbowmen.

Continued Continued: But even with the establishment of European style forces in 1700s, local fighters were still used as Skirmishers, and often to surprising results.

During the Seven Years War, England took the battle versus Spain in the Philippines by invading Manila in 1762. The regular Spanish force was virtually defeated and routed in battle by redcoats.

Believing in their own propaganda that Spics were slave-drivers and people under their bondage yearned to breathe freedom (under Anglo Protestant rule), they assumed that Flips would easily welcome English rule. They didn't take into account that a lot of Filipinos both native and half-breed were fucking Catholic and by this point, considered themselves subjects of Spain, and convinced that Anglos were godless moneyloving heretics who enslaved natives. A bunch of principalia (native nobles) declared a provisional Spanish government North of Manila and gave orders to 1) rescue Spanish officials and bring them North and 2) Continue to resist Britain until help from Spain arrives or the war ends.

The interdasting part came when the British marched northwards to quash the provisional government. With the European Army virtually annihilated, it was up to the native auxiliaries with their traditional weapons and a smattering of firearms to resist the English, and this they did effectively. Ambuscades with simple missile weapons & charges with native short swords. Raids into camps, and disappearing English soldiers dogged the English march to the North. The tactics were rather effective to the point that the British sat it down with the provisional government and discussed terms instead of claiming the Philippines. However the end of the war brought those to an end and England had no choice but to return the Philippines to SPain.

The reason the first invasion failed was because the Dutch retreated when they saw that they misjudged how many soldiers Aceh had. They were out-numbered 3-10 and lost only 81 men. You're acting like they were great warriors or something.
>>
>>1867184
even then it took them almost a century to finally subjugate aceh with heavy casualities

>30 years
>almost a century
And the only reason the Aceh War extends to 1904 is because of various rebellions and uprisings. They annexed the Aceh Sultanate 8 months after the first failed offensive.
