Why was Germany seen as the aggressor and "bad guy" during ww1 when their participation in the war effort was due to alliances just like the allies?

Propaganda

They lost.
Also Schlieffen Plan and stuff, maybe.
>>1863108
From whose perspective?
For the US. The US only declared war on Germany in WW 1 so our history books generally focus on Germany being the "bad guy."

The post-Napoleonic balance of powers was upset when Prussia expanded and became a bigger military power than any other nation.
>>1863108
and that invasion of Belgium was pretty dodgy.
>>1863108
They brought a gun to your run-of-the-mill knife fight and got everybody to pull their guns out, too

Mostly propaganda. British propaganda was effective in demonizing Germany - especially in the US. Meanwhile German propaganda was primarily about showing of strenght. Germany could have used warcrimes like the British sea embargo which caused ten thousands of Germans to starve and violated international treaties with the US, but they rather celebrated their victories in the east. To be fair - Germany made it pretty easy for the UK to demonize them.
The Rape of Belgium was pretty fucked up. While they aren't to fully blame for the war, they definitely were aggressors in it.
>>1863108
>Why was Germany seen as the aggressor
probably because they invaded a bunch of countries that weren't at war with them or any of their allies.
>was due to alliances just like the allies?
that's just bullshit. Austria-Hungary had declared war on Serbia, but Russia and France had yet to declare war on Austria Hungary as a response. Germany took the initiative and declared war in Russia, and also invaded Luxembourg, Belgium and France without provocation.

>Russia and France had yet to declare war on Austria Hungary as a response.
>they invaded a bunch of countries that weren't at war with them or any of their allies.
That argument is retarded.
The Russian army mobilized which was a pretty clear sign that they were about to come to Serbia's aid. Since Germany couldn't wait for Russia to finish mobilizing, they sent an ultimatum that Germany would declare war if the Russians didn't stop the mobilization. France also guaranteed to support Russia and didn't declare themselves neutral upon request.
If you want to prove the German responsibilty for WWI, I'd suggest a better argument: Germany enabled the Austrian attack on Serbia by guaranteeing support against a Russian involvement, thus starting the chain reaction.
>>1863108
Belgium.
>>1863108
Mostly because Austria being at war with Serbia didnt justify Germany attacking 4 other countries in a row
>>1863275
>France also guaranteed to support Russia
They didnt
The Franco-Russian alliance was weak as Russia hadnt supported France in the last crisis
There was no way to be sure France would help Russia, especially when they knew themselves weaker than Germany.
If you actually look at fact, Germany waited for two days after having attacked Russia, hoping France would jump, but as nothing happened they took the initiative to declare war on France themselves
>and didn't declare themselves neutral upon request.
Germany asked France to let them occupy several French cities near the border as a "proof of neutrality", which was obviously unacceptable

Their occupation of Luxembourg and invasion of Belgium (which brought Britain into the war) expanded the war and made it the colossal shitfest that it was. Without that it would be less of a world war and more of a large-scale continental dispute.
>>1863108
>when their participation in the war effort was due to alliances just like the allies?
because it was not "only alliances tee hee just like the allies"
germany actively wanted war and acted accordingly, and turned what might have been a local conflict into a world war
meanwhile the french did what? told russia that they are still allies (because they were afraid of germany attacking them), but not to do anything crazy (like something that would make germany attack them)

blank check

The Brits and French won. Britain and more so France were the aggressors.
>>1863108
because we wanted to be the bad guys
