When did the US start abbreviating it's presidents's names, for example FDR, JFK, LBJ etc? Why did this stop with Nixon?

I think Teddy Roosevelt was called TR even before he became president. Not sure though
Nixon didn't use a three-letter initial, even though he has a middle name. His memoirs are titled "RN".
Pretty sure GWB is used occasionaly, I assume it's just for presidents who for whatever reason were referred to with the middle name/initial enough that people would recognize the abbreviation.

Nixon is a catchy short surname, much like Clinton
