A thread on monasticism, for those who have interest or even drawing to the monastic life. A very difficult life in Orthodoxy, one that tests you against all sorts of demons and struggle, but which will purify you with fire.

>A monk, then, as a soldier of Christ ever ready for battle, ought always to walk with his loins girded.
- Saint John Cassian

>A monk is a mourning soul that both asleep and awake is unceasingly occupied with the remembrance of death.
-Saint John of the Ladder

All other questions relating to Orthodoxy also welcome.

Every demon a monk faces a normie already faces, actually a normie faces more because he doesn't have the luxury of living in a cloistered, quiet hermitage, but has to live among the people in the busy world, like Jesus and the apostles did.

I think monasticism is fine in short periods, a month here, a couple months there....a year at the most. But it should never be a long term life style for any Christian.
>>
>>1849474
Christ faced much more direct temptation in the desert than among other people.

Monasticism is a hard life, because you have to devote everything to God. There is no "you" time.
>>
>>1849515
>There is no "you" time

that applies to living among people. time should be spent wisely, but it's more difficult since there are so many distractions and problems.

Christ and his apostles lived among people far more than in the desert.
>>
>>1849559
No, it doesn't really apply to living among people, unless you literally do nothing but labor and pray all day. Monastics are consecrated only to God. Certainly, we can live a holy life without being a monastic, but historically speaking, most of the deepest spiritual insights and strongest humility comes from monastics, because it is extremely difficult to live that lifestyle outside of a monastery. If you can live like that, fast intensely and live in poverty and pray for hours a day outside of a monastery, then more power to you, but most can't. And even if you can, things are a lot more difficult without an elder to constantly correct you and teach you.

Christ and his Apostles were leaders of the Church, yes.
>>
>>1849588
>No, it doesn't really apply to living among people, unless you literally do nothing but labor and pray all day.

That's what a good christian is supposed to do, plus spread the word to people, all while taking care of his family, his responsibilities, and practice charity and so forth.

Monks living cloistered together can only be charitable to each other, and don't have as many opportunities to engage with strangers. They're never really put to the test because they live too reclusively.

>because it is extremely difficult to live that lifestyle outside of a monastery.

ya that's my point, it's more challenging to be "holy" in the normal world, but it's also much more rewarding and more fruitful. the easy path isn't always the right path.

>Christ and his Apostles were leaders of the Church, yes.

Christ said to follow him, i.e his example, how he lived and what he believed; which was an active life that engaged with strangers and daily-normal life, that's how the word is spread and that's how you can bear the most fruit.

If Jesus wanted cloistered monks he'd do what buddha did and start a monastery and teach his apostles to sit and pray all day and detach from the "household" life style. If anything Jesus wanted travelers, missionaries, not people who stick in one spot all the time.
>>
>>1849621
>They're never really put to the test because they live too reclusively.
Nope, the greatest temptations are faced by monastics. Demons harass the most those who have great strength and isolation.

> the easy path isn't always the right path.
It's a question of whether or not it is even possible for you. It's not for most, and in fact the monastics say demons will often try to discourage those drawn to the monastic life by saying they could do it in the world and would do more good. Of course, these people never actually put aside comfort and worldliness, they spend their time trying to dissuade others from dying to the world.

> which was an active life that engaged with strangers and daily-normal life, that's how the word is spread and that's how you can bear the most fruit.
Even if you evangelize to a thousand people, it won't be worth anything if you did not master yourself. Examine yourself, first. Are you living in poverty? are you foregoing luxury? are you experiencing extreme contrition?

What truthful rebuke did you just righteously utter of me, you worthiest of souls? I’ll have you know I failed God to the deepest of the pit in my class of worldly sinners, and I’ve been involved in numerous shameful transgressions on God's forgiveness, and I have over 300 confirmed faults. I am depraved in wicked thoughts and I’m the top coveter in the entire legions of the damned. I am nothing to thee but just another Satan. I will praise you to heaven and back with the most contrite of hearts the likes of which has been seen all too often from the sinner, mark my unworthy lips. You think you can serve away with your words of wisdom to me over the Internet? God bless, brother. As we speak I am contacting my holy communion of saints across heaven and your love is being traced right now so you better prepare for the Theosis, militant. The mercy that sustains the shining little thing you call your soul. You’re God's gift, kid. I can be all things at all times to all men, and I can bow to you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just while kissing your hand. Not only am I extensively corrupted by unnameable vileness, but I have betrayed to the entire covenant of the Orthodox Body of Christ, and I will plead her to her full benevolence to sanctify your virtuous spirit off the face of the lie, you little star. If only you could have known what holy gratitude your little “meek” correction was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have blessed your benign tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re reaping the harvest, you God fearing joy. I will weep thanks all over you and you will drown in it. You've found life, kiddo.

I'm so confused by Constantine's story. It claims at one point it was raised a Sikh, then in another place it was apparently Anglican, who converted to Greek Orthodoxy within the last 2 years. They also seem, in the older threads, to REALLY hate porn and anime. Seems like a picture is finally emerging... Oh and transgenderism is a top of conversation in MANY old threads.... hmmmmmm

Reminder that these threads are started by the tripfag Constantine, who was run out of every board he posts in for being a tranny faggot. Remind he is a recent convert who was a member of at least two other religions and is a known religious maniac.

He also hates porn and anime. I mean he REALLY hates them.

This is him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RmFO-wXTQc

Also nice job reporting the truth because you want to suppress it, you fucking faggot tranny.

>>
>>1849445
As an American, what Orthodox influences did you have in your life before your recent conversion? And why did you decide to leave the Anglican church? I find it odd that an American was a member of the Anglican church, especially since by your own words you weren't raised in it. You said you were raised in a certain sect of Sikhism? Can you tell us more about how that happened? Are you white, or are your parents perhaps immigrants? And why, may I ask, are you so anti pornography and anime? Did you at one time have a problem with porn, or an addiction to anime?

Thanks, and God Bless

Let's talk about innovation in the "Traditio".

The orthodox bishop are monks but, how it is possible that the first bishops were monk if the monasticism didn't stablished centuries after?

Constantine I don't care for your personal life and I think that sharing any personal details about yourself was a mistake
But you were a person who seriously debated religion and that's an ability completely beyond 99% of the internet and something I think should have a place on this board, because otherwise we are all agnostic memers who then degenerate into fedoras at the slightest mention of God or Jesus or any Christian subject

I don't have a problem personal with either porn or anime, I oppose them because they're extremely immoral, and because these boards are flooded with them.

>>1855234
It's not Orthodox dogma that bishops have to be tonsured monks, it's an Orthodox canon, which means a rule promulgated by the Church for administrative purposes. We did innovate it, we've found it very helpful. We don't claim it is dogmatic or taught by Christ, we just claims it's been quite useful for us.

If this is actually Constantine then suddenly the obsession with Orthodoxy as a complete ideological, philosophical and social panacea makes sense. Of course you can't conceive of other viewpoints if you're using your own to self-medicate. I hope things turn out okay for you, Constantine.
