Certainly, we can live a holy life without being a monastic, but historically speaking, most of the deepest spiritual insights and strongest humility comes from monastics, because it is extremely difficult to live that lifestyle outside of a monastery. If you can live like that, fast intensely and live in poverty and pray for hours a day outside of a monastery, then more power to you, but most can't. And even if you can, things are a lot more difficult without an elder to constantly correct you and teach you.

Christ said to follow him, i.e his example, how he lived and what he believed; which was an active life that engaged with strangers and daily-normal life, that's how the word is spread and that's how you can bear the most fruit.

If Jesus wanted cloistered monks he'd do what buddha did and start a monastery and teach his apostles to sit and pray all day and detach from the "household" life style. If anything Jesus wanted travelers, missionaries, not people who stick in one spot all the time.
