To answer your question, math helps separate myth from nonfiction. How do you know if it's possible for a church, or a harbor, or a ship to have been built if all the records are clearly destroyed? You use math to try and approximate the dimensions of your hypothetical model. Then you hire engineers to build it, then you hire artists to photograph it and paint it, then you realize the geometry-fag was right all along, and then you have to remake ANOTHER galley, and again, and again, and again, until you discover the most likely method of construction that was used by the people of 1,000,000,000 BC using just your ruler and and bunch of string.

Your job is to make that whole "again, and again, and again" part into just "again".
