They were probably native Americans of some kind. Their culture was hugely influential, which kind of makes them a mesoamerican Sumeria.

This proves that Ancient Turks were the first to colonize Mesoamerica.

They were largely in the tradition of the civilizations that followed them.
Iconographic scribbles might be described as "proto-Mayan" (or Zapotec).
Similar ceremonial dress as depicted in artwork.
Ample evidence of ritual bloodletting.
Likely human sacrifice, including babies (disarticulated human skeletons from babies to adults found at one site).
An artistic obsession with crying babies ("were-jaguars") may have be a precursor to the Mayan practice of torturing infants to induce tears, which were supposed to bring about rain.

The Olmecs are interesting. They werre contemporaries to Tlatilco, and the Zapotecs who had were centered in Monte Alban. The large colossal heads show characters perhaps rulers in ballplayer gear. They also did brilliant artwork with jade.
The shrine of the silver monkey?
