McCarthy has nothing to do with the Hollywood blacklist. He's a senator, the blacklist came from HUAC.

There were communist agents everywhere.
During WW2, the US would literally let any Russian hop off a plane or boat and just dissapear into the continental US, no keeping track. Just read about some of the shit the Commies pulled off on their efforts to get ahold of data from the Manhattan Project.

The Hollywood Blacklist was all about publicity. These people's membership to socialist causes or even the communist party was entirely legal and constitutional in the United States and they should not have been persecuted for it. If there was evidence they engaged in active foreign espionage then those people should have been outright arrested, not trotted before a star chamber on the flimsiest of evidence like 'unnamed FBI informant #12 saw your name on a membership list of the Communist Party of East Milwaukee' then asked to implicate others entirely for political reasons. It was so sad and petty, it was the behavior we shamed the Soviets for doing all the time and then seemed entirely too stupid to realize when we were.

Largely false, and again if you have evidence of him directly committing treason then he should have been arrested and tried for it, rather than publicly accused based on hearsay and guilt by association.

The United States and the Soviet Union were never at war. Ever. The Cold War was not an actual war, you know that right? Just because they had bad relations and fought via proxies isn't the same as outright war, and the fact that the world is not an irradiated wasteland is proof of that distinction's importance.

He was right about communists in hollywood, whether this was a threat or not justifying his draconian response is another debate. I don't think there was much chance of communist subversion in the US, the US itself has a very strong ideology of liberty similar to anarchism that can't really be faulted with "muh exploitation". Communism at best would be a minor social ill.

Shouldn't have existed

There will always be a problem in fighting communism within a country that claims to be liberal. How can you give communists liberty when the believe nothing of the sort? How can you treat communists humanely when their ideology destroys any sense of humanity within its victims?

Some actors didn't want to talk to a congressional committee, the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). they were in contempt of congress. This entailed less than a year in jail at the most and a $100-1000 fine if they were tried and convicted.

The actors were fired by their studios. Lots of commies cried and made a fuss and refused to cooperate with congress. More studio execs decided they wouldn't work with these people until they were cleared of their charges and disowned communism.

They didn't so they werent hired for a while. This is the "blacklist".

I think one or two went to jail for a month or two.

Hollywood commies have been crying about this ever since. It was another shoah.

McCarthy had nothing to do with any of this. But he also never did anything wrong.

Considering how modern Hollywood blacklist anyone to the right of Lavrenty Beria (see what happened to Mel Gibson). I can't see how their hatred of McCarthy can be anything but hypocritical.

It's weird that the CPUSA is remembered as some shadowy organization that McCarthy attacked and investigated in the 50s but everyone forgets how strong they were in the '20s and '30s.
