I also had a job once where I worked with the military to help identify recently discovered bodies of WWI and WWII soldiers by going through personnel files in archives to help narrow down lists of candidates, as well as answering historical inquiries sent to my department sometimes. There's also aboriginal affairs in Canada (I can only assume the USA has a similar institution) that handles shit like the treaties we signed with natives and they seem to hire lots of history students.

But as for OP's question, if you don't find the study of history satisfying in and of itself, don't bother. It's not really worth it as a field to get into for the sake of other benefits, it's not exactly a field overflowing with well-paying jobs. However, the uni education gives you skills outside of the field that are generally pretty useful for government/bureaucratic jobs. Being able to find a large amount of information (or have the information provided) and condense it into a concise well-reasoned summary / argument is valuable, and you'd be fucking shocked how many people can't do it worth a damn.

Learning a trade and pursuing a hobby are two different things. You can learn something useful to make money and be interested in History, Philosophy and really anything else.
