As for prosperity, that's not exactly true either. The North has always had a lot of rich kingdoms. The South has just been extremely stable, with a more consistent culture of scholarship.

Southerners have more civic sense so less likely to see trash / crap everywhere. Kerala has a high HDI thanks to comprehensive maternity clinic infrastructure and widespread sterilization that kept population growth low.

It would be modernizing quite nicely as well except mix of communalism and luddite thinking ("automation will replace all our jobs") and inflexible workers union (workers require pay for sitting and watching automated spinning machines in textile mills) has interfered and you have an odd phenomena with HDI and low GDP / capita.
