How come the polynesians never settled in australia? They went almost everywhere across the pacific but never into australia.
>>
mainstream answer: unlike white devils they respected the aboriginal rights to their land

actual answer: couldn't defeat the aborigines

The migrations to Polynesia starting around 1200 BC kept going eastward after they left northeast New Guinea (except the voyages to New Zealand), so they just bypassed Australia entirely.

Because there were already people there.

Some of them settled the Torres Strait Islands above Northern Australia. The Islanders are distinctly Polynesian and look and act quite differently from Aborigines.
Dunno why they didn't settle mainland Aus though

Countless tribes of cannibalistic apes already there

Emus.

Might surprise you to learn that jungles can sustain more people than a desert, so it was pretty crowded. Would you really want to try living with poisonous snakes, spiders, crocs, and abos? I didn't think so.

The answers so far are not correct, because they neglect the route around Melanesia via New Zealand. If the Polynesians could make it from the Cooks and Australs all the way to New Zealand, why not the comparatively shorter distance from NZ to Australia?

The answer may have to do with what happened when the Polynesians made it New Zealand. One persistent driver of migration across Central Polynesia was population pressure: as islands fill up, there are greater incentives to set out and find a new island to live on. Even Hawaii, gigantic by Polynesian standards, filled up to a maximum around 400,000 people in about a thousand years.

New Zealand was wholly different; by unit area it's 15 times the size of Hawaii. When the people who became the Maori arrived, they faced a terrain so bountiful and open that presumably there was simply was no reason to explore further and find Australia.

Geoffry Irwin has argued that Maori canoe technology was also on the decline. Long-distance trips to Central Polynesia ceased a few hundred years after initial settlement of New Zealand, and the Maori mostly abandoned outrigger and double-hull designs, along with the sophisticated astronavigation techniques perfected by their ancestors.

If I understand the literature right, New Zealand was such a bonanza that simply no reason to go further, at least in the time scales we observe.

Wasn't New Zealand all forest before the Maori?

Presumably so, since it was uninhabited.

Torres Strait Islanders are Melanesian not Polynesian.

Still vast tracts of land either way. It's not as though the other islands of Polynesia didn't have dense foliage.

Polynesians are autist boat people who will panic if they can't sea the ocean.
>>
>>1805249
No they are not. Polynesians never got anywhere near the Torres Strait. Given that the main language of the Torres Strait Islanders, Kala Lagaw Ya consists of a mix of Pama Nyungan (Australian) and Papuan (with some Oceanic thrown in), I'd guess that the people off the Torres Strait are probably a mixture of Melanesian and Australian.

Racist and oppressive Aboriginal Australian immigration policies had all the Polynesians who tried to make their way over "detained" (imprisoned) on small, poor, Pacific Islands so they could keep that high standard of living and giant spiders all to themselves!
