He was one of the most based 20th century dictators without a doubt.

Handsome.

You won't get much out of /his/. I've seen many threads like this die.

Portugal is still a cesspool though.

Whatever he did didn't work well enough.
>>
>>1802742
That's probably because of him, not despite him
>>
Estado Novo was breddy good and did far more than the 1st Republic ever wishes it could. Salazar was a pretty competent politican and leader overall.

So what was good about him?
>>

He actually made this country work, somehow.

In the last few years of his reign portuguese economy was growing about 10% a year, while funding a 3-front war in Africa.

But unfortunately he was shit at taking care of unrest among the population, which sealed his fate.

>while funding a three front war
Funding a war would help the economy. From my skimming of the Wikipedia article it looks like significant economic development didn't start until 1960 or so, 28 years into his reign

Let's see:
>revived Portugal's failed economy from the 1st rep.
>created a shit-ton of new jobs and industries
>increased the average Portuguese's' quality of life drastically
>Economic policies enabled a considerable degree of social mobility
>developed Nationalism that wasn't based on pseudo-scientific racial theories
>Prevented the Fascists (Blueshirts) and the Communists from taking over
>Kept Portugal (and Spain) out of WW2 via the Iberian Pact
>Helped the allies by allowing them to use Portuguese islands as Airfields
>Denounced Shitler for the Nuremburg Laws
>Took in a bunch of refugees during WW2, effectively saving thousands of lives
>one of the founding members of NATO
>promoted Catholic social teaching whilst keeping the state and church separated
>gave aid to based Rhodesia
>>
>it looks like significant economic development didn't start until 1960 or so, 28 years into his reign

Portugal was already a backwards country while under monarchy, and the first republic absolutely raped whatever little economy we had. He basically built everything from scratch.
There's also some other factors, like the iliteracy rate, which was over 60% back when salazar took over

Gimme some stats on the economy

Wow, slow down there friend. The largely rural population didn't see much improvement in their standards of living.
>>
>>1803043
oh yeah, also forgot to add that under Estado Novo, the literacy rates of Portuguese children increased to 97% by 1960
>>
>>1803048
I'm not the other guy, but here's a graph
notice how post-1974 there's barely any growth, even with EU gibsmedat from 85 onwards

>>
>>1803081
so what happened in the 1960's that lead to that growth? was it just everything previous paying off?
>>
>>1803087
when salazar got in in 1926, he had to spend about a decade just fixing the economic recession the first republic left behind. This made portugal fall behind even more compared to other developded countries. Real modernization of the economy only began in the 1950's, so yeah, all that growth post-60's is just the previous paying off
