Are winged Hussars a meme?
If /int/ or /pol/ like them then yes
>muh white race
>>1802020
Yes, they were never used in battle. Nobody sane would wear giant handles into battle when the generally the prime objective of cavalrymen is to actually stay on your horse
>>1802040
I hope you just mean that they never wore their wings in battle because claiming that hussars were never used in battle I think is hands down the stupidest thing I've ever seen on here
>>1802066
Weren't the wings one of the main reasons they were so effective?
>>1802040
>what is battle of Vienna
kill yourself
also wings were not obligatory
>>1802089
Yes, it was the wings. Not the extra long lance, heavy armor, brace of pistols, high morale, excellent training, and incredible unit cohesion.
The only thing more vital than the wings was, of course, the lion pelt.
>>1802367
>lion
it was leopard pelt
As a Turk I actually respect this element of Polish mastercrafted Cavalry to instill fear upon to enemy and at the same time rally their own. And when they were done fighting they could just use the wings as toilet cleaners for maximal useage.
kudos, towarzysz
>>1802412
Well they were reported to have wings in Vienna as well. So still kys. And most of the time they were attached to the saddle not to the armor.
>>1802020
They were the best cavalry in the history of Europe.
>Battle of Lubieszów (1577)
This war marked the beginning of the heyday of the Polish-Lithuanian hussars in which about 1,300 winged hussars smashed an enemy force 10,000 strong, of which 3,000 were the famed Landsknechts (German mercenary pikemen), with 7 cannons, 30 light cannons, 800 cavalry and other militiamen.
Result: The battle resulted in the loss of 4,000-4,500 of the City of Danzig's forces while the total Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth losses were only 88 men (few of them winged hussars)!
>Battle of Kircholm (1605)
Considered as one of the greatest Polish-Lithuanian cavalry charges, the winged hussars sealed the fate of the Swedish in 20 minutes by a devastating charge following a feigned retreat to lure the Swedish cavalry from their strategic high ground. The Poles were outnumbered 1:3 with 1,000 infantry and 2,600 cavalry on their side, while the Swedes, though poorly rested, consisted of 2,500 cavalry and 8,368 infantry.
Result: After a surprisingly short charge from the winged hussars, the Swede cavalry retreated completely and they lost 7,600-8,000 men with the total Polish-Lithuanian losses being 100!
>Battle of Kłuszyn (1610)
This bloody battle with the combined Swede-Russian alliance saw the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth forces being outnumbered 1:5; they comprised of 6,500-6,800 men of which 80% were hussars, while the Swede-Russian forces consisted of 35,000 men. The battle lasted five hours and the hussars had to charge repeatedly (sometimes 8 to 10 times).
>>1802502
>Battle of Vienna (1683)
This Battle was important because of two incredibly famous reasons:
a) It marked in a huge Turkish rout, resulting in the stoppage of Turkish expansion into Christian Europe,
b) Largest Cavalry battle in human history!
This battle was the turning point in history after which "the Ottoman Turks ceased to be a menace to the Christian world". The Ottoman army consisted of about 300,000 men with elite Janissary and Sipahi units, while the defending forces consisted of 50,000-60,000 Germans, 24,000 in Viennese garrison and 15,000-20,000 Poles.
The Ottomans intended to take Vienna before the Polish relief forces, led by the king John III Sobieski himself (later called the Savior of Christendom by the Pope and "Lion of Lechistan" by the Ottoman belligerents themselves), arrived. The Ottomans attacked early at 4 a.m. The Polish infantry arrived in the afternoon and the hussars came into action at around 4 p.m. when the infantrymen cheered their arrival from the forest. At 6 p.m., Sobieski himself led the largest cavalry charge with 15,000 horses, spearheaded by 3,000 winged hussars.
So I don't think they were a meme.
>>1802020
they were a decent cavalry unit
>>1802441
Fucking shoo roach
>>1802040
Cavalry charge is alone scary thing. But wings would enhance that effect, by "making" hussars more numerous and higher, than they were in reality. It works in animal world (where a child with long stick will scare away lions), and in human world. Who in your opinion would be more dangerous opponent in fist fight - a midget, or motherfucking 2 meters high and 120kg in weight guy?
Another thing are horses, in nature very fearful herd animals. You can train them to not be scared of things, but you need to train every case separately. So trained horses would be indifferent to gunfire, charging etc. but new thing such as hussars wings would probably scare them shitless.
>>1804578
Nah, copypasted it from some site.
Seems accurate though.
>>1804578
It is accurate. Don't try to out meme it into obscurity

They lost to german panzers

They were best cavalry in Europe ever hands down. So no.
They were for cavalry what Spanish tercios were for infantry.

Wasn't the entire point of the wings that they were not actually worn but part of the saddle?
Their fame piggybanks on the Siege of Vienna but honestly they seem to have been very effective shock cavalry.

COMING DOWN THE MOUNTAINSIDE!
I heard the wings were originally inspired by some sort of contraption they used to prevent Tatar fucking shits from lassoing them off their horses.
Is this a meme or no?
>>1802020
They preformed fantastic and helped pave the way towards modern idea of how calvary is to be used in physiological terms.
The wings whistled as they charged making the enemy even more scared when they hit
