tl;dr : Mandatory Church attendance is more of a reformation thing, it wouldn't have been a big deal if a King didn't go to Church in medieval times

When you're the king, the church goes to you. And nobody would know if you decided not to let it.

King John was reportedly an atheist. Very unreligious, didn't go to church, partied and fucked bitches all the time.

It was a huge deal, and a fairly large part of the reason why he ended up getting fucked by the Barons/etc.

1. "Medieval king" is too broad a term

2. I doubt royalty was going at church every Sunday like some American blacks in Alabama

3. Obviously he needs to attend major ceremonies, which pretty much revolve around the church and its head

4. The church will probably start telling the plebs the king is Satan himself or something like that and the nobles will take the chance and dethrone him.

And on top of that, the King could still very easily avoid ever going to church if he had felt like staying home and browsing /gif/ instead. He'd obviously not make it public, but no one could actually say he lied about going.
