South Vietnam had a right to exist and to have its borders respected by other sovereign powers, no?
Define right to exist? It was a highly unpopular puppet regime in every sense of the phrase.

If it had been as unpopular at the VWP asserted then there wouldn't have been such a large refugee crisis, of people fleeing the country, after Saigon fell no?
And the extent to which, at the very least Diem's government was a puppet regime is up for debate.

>South Vietnam had a right to exist and to have its borders respected by other sovereign powers, no?
not with that ugly ass flag lmao
>>1776192
>unpopular
>puppet
>regime
>>1776190
>right to exist
spooky
>>1776190
If it was the victor yes, otherwise people will point at the American who funded French to recolonize Vietnam then installed their puppet government there, it's not like Mr Diem was being faithful to his vote too so he didn't have support from the people

>Although people continued to flee Vietnam into the mid-1990s, nearly all later boat people have been regarded as economic, not political, refugees.
>The conference decided that all Vietnamese boat people arriving after a cutoff date - June 16, 1988, in Hong Kong and March 14, 1989, for other Southeast Asian nations - would no longer receive automatic status as refugees, but would be screened to decide who among them were real refugees with a ''well-founded fear of persecution'' and who were economic migrants.
considering the south had the more ethnically diverse population that was non-chinese descended bc only minority in the north are chinese and hmong and theyre all culturally related, you could make an argument for uniqueness there, but even as much as i support south vietnam, the idea of two separate vietnams is pretty shitty. and at least the commies didnt totally ruin vietnam like china and russia
>>1776190
If it was unable to defend itself independently of foreign intervention, it does not deserve to exist. The South Vietnamese fully collapsed just 3 months into a major offensive, with over 10 years of fighting just for that abysmal result.
that also goes for all nations too, if a nation cannot effectively defend its own borders on its own merit, then it simply cannot be called an independent nation.
>>1777035
if the russians and chinese stopped giving the north ammo and replacement parts, the north couldnt defend itself either
>>1776190
Not with that shit flag
>>1777047
The same goes to the south, if USA stops giving resource and troops the south couldn't defend itself, at some point Chinese did stop giving the north supply
If not for its unfortunate geography (porous borders with Laos and Cambodia), South Vietnam would probably still exist today in the same way South Korea still exists. It might have even shared in the economic success with the other Asian tigers after the 1980s.
>>1777064
Why is people keep saying this while the south couldn't even produce their own food and 1/3 of their GDP came from American?
>>1777076
They couldn't produce their own food because of constant disruption due to the major fucking guerilla warfare going on in the countryside. I'm sure RoK couldn't produce their own food during the Korean War too.
South Vietnam was on its way to industrializing in the early to mid-1970s and would have regained its economic strength if the armistice had been maintained. Granted, most of the foreign capital was coming from the United States, but is that really any different than the economic situation that exists there under the communists today?

More like because of the huge corruption within the country itself, when the president's brother got to be the chief political advisor you know it's fucked up, meanwhile the north had to grow their own crop while eating Agent Orange and napalm to the face, south got none of that so it's a fair fight really
Hard to say, but if American didn't pull an embargo Vietnam could have become much better
>>1777116
>meanwhile the north had to grow their own crop while eating Agent Orange and napalm to the face, south got none of that so it's a fair fight really
Except the vast majority of Agent Orange and napalm was dropped on the South's countryside, not in the North.
>>1777129
Which targeted the people of the north and not the south, and then it's not like they threw more bombs than the entire WWII and employed B52 to shit on the north
>>1776190
>mfw somebodies implies the south have rights
