Can we have a thread on ancient traditions still being practiced today?

>>Baby jumping (El Colacho) is a traditional Spanish holiday dating back to 1620 that takes place annually to celebrate the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi in Burgos.[1][2] During the act, known as El Salto del Colacho (the devil's jump) or simply El Colacho, men dressed as the Devil (known as the Colacho) in red and yellow jump suits jump over babies born during the previous twelve months of the year who lie on mattresses in the street. The "devils" hold whips and oversized castanets as they jump bravely over the unaware infants.

>>The Brotherhood of Santísimo Sacramento de Minerva organizes the week-long festivities which culminate on Sunday when the Colacho jumps over the babies on the mattresses placed on the procession route traversing the town.[3] The origins of the tradition are unknown but it is said to cleanse the babies of original sin, ensure them safe passage through life and guard against illness and evil spirits.[4][5][6] In recent years, Pope Benedict has asked Spanish priests to distance themselves from El Colacho, and to downplay the tradition’s connection with Catholicism. The Church still teaches that it is baptism by water, not a giant leap by an airborne devil, which cleanses the soul of original sin.[7]

that's pretty awesome. I think it's cool as hell that those people are doing something their ancestors have done since goddamn 1620.

I was raised Catholic and don't believe any more, but I'd still do something like this if I had a kid there, just to take part in the tradition of it. Seems a lot less serious than baptizing a kid.

I dunno.

I would also be the guy picked to dress up as the devil and do the jumping.

the Devil wears Adidas, who knew.

There's a similar tradition in France called the "saint-jean", except it's kids who do it and they have to jump over a fire.

I remember when I was a kid in the 90s, some dumb faggot tripped and got really heavy burns. He had to be helicoptered to a hospital in switzerland.

There is still the tradition of "Dance of the Flyers" in Mesoamerica, which is an ancient Totonac tradition where they swing around a pole as a form of asking the Gods to end a drought.

Pre-Christian Alpine traditions are interesting. Krampus comes from those parts

>Ancient customs survived in the rural parts of Austria, Switzerland, Bavaria, Slovenia, western and northern Croatia and north eastern Italy in the form of dance, art, processions, rituals and games. The high regional diversity results from the mutual isolation of Alpine communities. In the Alps, the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and paganism has been an ambivalent one. While some customs survived only in the remote valleys inaccessible to the church's influence, other customs were actively assimilated over the centuries. In light of the dwindling rural population of the Alps, many customs have evolved into more modern interpretations.

In Croatia, as a part of those pre-Christian traditions, we have Zvončari.

>The custom dates to pagan antiquity, and remains typical for this region. The primary task of Zvončari is to scare away evil spirits of winter and to stir up new spring-time cycle.

The Croatian minority in Hungary has something similar. They are called Busójárás.

>According to the most popular legend, during the Ottoman times of the territory, people from Mohács fled the town, and started living in the nearby swamps and woods to avoid Ottoman (Turkish) troops. One night, while they were sitting and talking around the fire, an old Šokac man appeared suddenly from nowhere, and said to them: "Don't be afraid, your lives will soon turn to good and you'll return to your homes. Until that time, prepare for the battle, carve various weapons and scary masks for yourselves, and wait for a stormy night when a masked knight will come to you." He disappeared as suddenly as he arrived. The refugees followed his orders, and some days later, on a stormy night, the knight arrived. He ordered them to put on their masks and go back to Mohács, making as much noise as possible. They followed his lead. The Turks were so frightened by the noise, the masks, and the storm in the night, that they thought demons were attacking them, and they ran away from the town before sunrise.

It is unlikely a pagan tradition would uniformly cover an area spanning Spain to Eastern Europe, though local pagan traditions may have been incorporated the way germanic/norse sacred trees became christmas trees.

Many feasts days of saints were simply pagan celebrations that were appropriated by the Church establishment in order to ease the transition from paganism to Christianity. For example, the Church authorities might take a feast day formerly belonging to a fertility god and simply remove the former pagan deity's name and replace it with 'St. John', for example.

That being said, you are a retard.

Mattanza is a traditional tuna-fishing method in Sicily that draws its roots back from Roman times, some even say it originated from Carthaginians.

Every year in May or June when tunas migrate into Mediterranean for mating, several hundred fishermen gather around on long fishing boats and put huge, specially for this purpose made fishing nets into the water. When swarms of tunas are caught in this trap, the fishermen begin drawing back the nets, and start ritually killing the helpless tunas with harpoons while singing traditional songs dedicated to Virgin Mary. It is speculated that this same tradition existed long before the rise of Christianity, except the songs were dedicated to pagan gods.

Mattanza is generally rare today as tunas in the Mediterranean are hard to find because of extensive, industrial fishing.

Here is an accurate depiction of mattanza from some vintage Italian movie, note the moment when they start singing.
