Was LBJ the last President to pretend to give a shit about poor and working class Americans? Why did the Great Society and the War on Poverty fail so badly?
>>
>>1729511
>fail so badly
This is literal meme history
Black poverty rate halved under Johnsons presidency, which obviously had an influence on total poverty rate
>>
>>1729513

>pretending the great society was anything other than a collosal failure which just forced ghetto blacks into middle class white neighborhoods, causing white flight, and those nice neighborhoods to become ghettos of squalor, drugs, and violent crime
>>
>>1729523
The Great Society had a lot of good ideas and helped improve race relations the only problem was that the Vietnam War cut into its funding and overshadowed its successes.
>>
LBJ got drawn into Vietnam the same way Bush II got drawn into the War on Terror. That took up his foreign policy mandate, so his administration couldn't really nail it on the domestic stuff. Then you have Nixon failing to follow through, then suddenly an energy crisis, and anti-poverty policies went to shit after 1980.
>>
>>1729511

>>
>>1729545

>successes
>tripling of the illegitimacy rate among blacks in three decades
>>
>>1729566
>implying that's not exactly what happened with America during WWII
>>
>>1729565
I've actually heard recordings of LBJ talking about Vietnam, and he legitimately believed that if he lost Vietnam communism would spread all through SE Asia. But he hated the war, despite his public association of the war with his own masculinity.

He once said that if he could just get Minh in across a table, he could end the war in minutes. He actually worked hard to end it peacefully, and had a major role in initiating peace talks. But yeah, it helped kill the Great Society.

>>1729566
It wasn't about stimulus, the economy was still growing. It was about protecting the most vulnerable members of society.
>>
>>1729569

>think that was any way related to the Great Society

By that fucking logic the creation of vaccines was a failure of science because it decreased mortality rates and increased longevity therefore contributing to global overpopulation.
>>
>>1729523
How did it force blacks.
Do you mean making redlining and housing discrimination illegal?
>>
>>1729511
I don't even think he pretended, though I think he cared a damn site less about most than he put on.
>>
>>1729887
He understood poverty well since he lived it.
>>
>>1729597
>fluke because of war mobilization and women having their own income to spend how they please.
>>
We've had a run of elite political class presidents for the last 20 years. And although presidents after LBJ came from working class families they don't seem to have cared much for the class of people they came from. Though for some of them its hard to gauge. Like Nixon.
>>
>>1729804

then what was the cause pham? legacy of slavery somehow becoming more pronounced the farther removed we get from actual slavery?
>>
>>1729932

Anglo society and the Mestizo system that's prominent in former colonies. Anglo culture encourages social stratification and the establishment of rigid class systems; politically conservative Anglos are content to let their betters rule and make decisions for them, this attitude isn't helpful in establishing a more egalitarian society.

The mestizo system puts whites above the social pyramid with European-borns at the very top and blacks and brownies at the very bottom. This caste system encourages abuse of the lower castes by the higher and middle castes, just as we've seen in other societies with pronounced caste systems it seeks to protect itself by enforcing established rules. We see this every time there are progressive movements within the black community that seeks to uplift itself, the establishment lashes back to prevent such things from happening.
>>
>>1729511
As a racist, LBJ was a great man. His work in permanently destroying the nuclear family for African Americans went a long way in developing my crime and IQ statistics. Thanks LBJ, you working class hero!
>>
>>1729804
>overpopulation
Not this fucking meme again
Kys death cultist

Anyway the welfare policies subverted the usual american family structure by making more worthwhile being unmarried and unemployed than having a working husband (though his job is low pay) as a mother.

Hoped that made sense.

>>
Many people say they hate Presidents and all they do is just destroy black lives. Well that is not true. They have f the most difficult jobs in the world and you saying that big daddy government is not taking care of you is ridiculous. You need to get your bottom and get to work!
>>
I dont think BLM really is caring about the people they say they represent, all they do is attack people who they think are attacking them
>>
Most people cops shoot are criminals and went against what the officers told them and tried to harm either the officer or others around them.
>>
>>1730713
surely the class system is better than the caste system, that way black folks can become basketball players and presidents and such

This LBJ meme and him destroying African Americans meme is just so fucking stupid. It's ignorant of everything that has occured before LBJ was in power.

It's like ignoring everything that happened 5 years before WW2 started when talking about what caused ww2?
>>
>>1732206
It also ignores things like the fact that Black living standards/education/etc have skyrocketed since LBJ instituted his reforms but why let truth get in the way of racism.
>>
>>1729511

>Why did the Great Society and the War on Poverty fail so badly?

Because America gave up. It was working, it just needed to keep going.

However, as others have said, the Vietnam War and the way it was mishandled became LBJ's biggest legacy unfortunately.

Trump is pro working class

White Americans were just tired of subsidising brown "people" to no effect
>>
>>1732551
They wouldn't be on welfare if they could still get low-skilled jobs. But all the factories are closed and the entire economy is service-based, so they're fucked.
>>
>>1732563
We really need to push trade education a lot more than we do.
>>
>>1732563

That's the reason Trump is so awesome.

American Workers First

>>
>>1732551

Why are whites highlighted when Asian use less? Whites are "parasites" by the criteria of this image.
>>
>>1732563
>They wouldn't be on welfare if they could still get low-skilled jobs.

They are on welfare and do not have to work, so they do not.

You mistakenly apply causal direction.
>>
>>1732589

Whites have a higher median age so they use social security more. Either way the difference between Blacks Hispanics and Whites is huge.

Why are you surprised that White people are tired of paying taxes so Shaniqua can get 30 liters of grape juice for free every week?
>>
>>1729597

America was the only industrial power left in the entire world.
>>
>>1732599
In the US, there's workfare though.

The basic problem is that even with a job and government assistance, poor families have trouble escaping from poverty.

This is part culture, part economics. It was a lot easier to escape poverty in the 50s when a steelworker could support a family off of nothing but a high school diploma, and have enough money left over to buy a house and put the kids through college.

I suspect that the death of American unions is at least partly to blame for this depression in low skilled wages.

It's more than partly to blame (compare this graph to the OP's).

Also massive immigration since 1965 certainly isn't helping.
>>
>>1732624
Meant the one here
>>1732412
>>
>>1732618

Wait if unions were so good in the 50s and anyone could get a high paying job with little qualifications why was there a need for Great Society in the first place?
>>
>>1732551
But then umber of whites on welfare is much higher then all of them.

welfare isn't a black and latino only thing brah.
>>
>>1732630
Because poverty was widespread in American. Especially in areas with no jobs and industry. There's a reason Southerners of all colours migrated north.
>>
>>1732606
Shouldn't have brought her ancestors over and given them fucking nothing after letting them go. Real men clean up their messes.
>>
>>1732639
>Because poverty was widespread in American

But you just said that in the 50s thanks to the unions or something it was much easier to get a good paying job with little education and climb the ladder. Now you are saying that poverty was widespread despite that make up your mind

>>1732633

Do you have trouble understanding percentages?
>>
>>1732642
It wasn't my choice and if I was in charge at the time I wouldn't have done what they did and wouldn't have brought them over. So how is that my problem?
>>
>>1732633
>But then umber of whites on welfare is much higher then all of them.

not as a proportion of the total population. Remember ratios?

Blacks are 10% of the population and make up about 25% of welfare recipients.
>>
>>1732642

Well Shaniqua for once is doing much better in the rural South today than her cousins still stuck in Western Africa.

>clean up their messes

22 trillion dollars isn't enough?
>>
>>1729511
He didn't care more, he was just more able to provide help
>>
>>1732646
>easier
Do you know what easier means?
>>
>>1730839

In the Anglosphere there's no difference between class and caste. In fact the Anglo version is far worst than the societies that openly practice it. For example the caste system in India was never as rigid as it is now, and wasn't enforced especially in the more egalitarian Dravidian south, then the British came and they took the caste system and made it a reflection of their own rigid class structure.
>>
>>1732577
>American Workers first

>completely ignores the fact that Trump has his products made overseas

>>
>>1732576

Trade work is a meme.

The only reason trade-work is considered good is BECAUSE the supply of workers is relatively low. The more people in trades there are, the less available the work is.
>>
>>1729911
Bill Clinton grew up middle class, he definitely wasn't an elite
>>
>>1732609
That is wrong.

That also hurts econ growth
>>
>>1733365
>definitely wasn't an elite
that was factual back when he was running for President, but as soon as he left office he did become a elitist shill
>>
>>1733335
>"They say join the trades join the trades you'll get a great salary, career progression and value for your skills. They say that for every fucking thing before and look what happens? It gets fucking flooded. I only got all this *he points to his stuff* because NO one will do it and my field is sparse. The minute the the output of tradesmen from schools starts meeting industry demand shit will drop. I worry for the younger people in the future because if trades do become popular, things like apprenticeships with no pay will be a thing."
>>
>>1730736
>overpopulation
>a meme
At our current level of technology, the percentage of land being worked to support the global population, is already unsustainably high. (We actually do need forests n sheet)
Intensification of agriculture is also barely possible anymore.
Unless there is a green revolution level of increase in agriculture output through some new discovery, earth is fucked; if population projections are accurate of course
>>
>>1734856

The Vietnam War killed the Great Society.

That's pretty common knowledge at this point 2bh.
>>

>>
>>1734856
Agriculture in poor parts in the world hasn't even been modernized yet. It's not overpopulation but ubderutilisation if the land and resources and economy.

Black inequality will increase whenever the countries gdp rises. When something good is considered "oppression", its hard to take a "movement" seriously.
>>
>>1741554
Who are you quoting?

Not an argument.
>>
>>1741776

OP said 'pretend', and what matters is the effect. Trump is the white race's last stand.
>>

we did blame its because of those THE SOTUH WILL RISE AGAIN types were dealing with this crap
>>
>>1744212
yes it is an argument
how is it not
>>
>>1745766
Because most people realize that doing what's best for you comes before doing what's best for everyone. This is especially the case in countries with individualist mindsets like the United States. Ayn Rand was on the dole despite being staunchly against public welfare and the like. Why? Because if it exists she might as well take advantage of it whether she believes it exists or not.

tl;dr

opportunism > idealism for individualists
>>
>>1745775
that's called being a hypocrite
if you're speaking publicly against something while getting advantage from it you're going against what you're preaching about
trump knows that if he ships his jobs to turkey, china, bangladesh and so and so, he will get to keep more profit by having to pay workers less to get more rich, which is what the elites have been doing and then now he's going out there saying that he's gonna keep jobs in america when he can't even keep his own jobs in america? it's hypocrisy not opportunism
>>
>>1745777
>state that businesses can't afford to keep jobs in America
>move you jobs out of America because you can't afford it
>state you want to change this
>hypocrisy

You even outlined how it is not hypocrisy. Either way, the vast majority of his employees are American and only his clothing lines which are not subsidiaries of Trump corp, but manufacturers who have been licensed the name, are not.
>>
>>1745789
lol no
i said that businesses put their jobs outside the united states because they want to keep more profit, not because it's too expensive
do you think it's expensive to pay your own workers only $7.25/hr?
where did i outline it wasn't hypocrisy

trump ties made in china
trump sofas made in turkey
other trump products made in mexico, bangladesh and other third world countries
who decides to put these jobs there?
>>
>>1741776
LBJ did it to leave behind a legacy.
>>
>>1730736
R9k pls go
>>
>>1729511
Because after the neoliberal boom they didn't need the people when they had powerful business men who owned all the media outlets in their pockets, and so the race to the bottom that we're still stuck in today happened.
