A lot less than you'd think. The Belgians focussed exclusively on resource extraction and ran it with colonial officers. Most of it was focussed on only a few cities, far apart (Congo is fucking huge, btw). Not many natives involved at the high levels. After independence, most Europeans left.

Imagine your entire company is run with Microsoft, and Microsoft-certified IT drones. Then suddenly you decide, you know what? You're sick of Microsofts management and all the other strings attached, so you tell them "We're doing this our way now, bros". But Microsoft is pissed and says "yea nah cunts -- you want continued service, it will cost you 50% of your gross profits straight up, plus import and service charges". You have maybe a handful of people left who were familiar with computers and IT, but they fancied themselves cream of the crop Microsoft fanboys and decided to go back to HQ in Brussels. The rest of your employees can barely read and are more interested in which severed gorilla palm is most magically powerful.

Actually the name comes from a later-invented personified Goddess of the Americas: Columbia/Colombia. This kind of neo-classical romanticism was popular in the 1800s. See: Britannia, Europa, Marianne, Germania, Helvetia, Vašek, Zealandia, Lady Liberty, Bharat Mata (Mother India), etc.

Bohemia and Moravia are both full of Czech speakers, but belonged to different political entities (HRE and Austro-Hungarian Empire) for most of their histories... They weren't united until 1918.

Czechia sounds a little funny to English ears, but it's the best name there is.
