Pakistan is the worst, I couldn't believe at first that a country would actually have initials as its name.

>Although known as the ‘Pakistan Resolution’, the Lahore text made no mention of ‘Partition’ or ‘Pakistan’ as such. The term was still an academic fiction. It had first been adopted by a group of Muslims at Cambridge in the early 1930s as a wishful acronym for a greater Muslim homeland consisting of P(unjab), A(fghania, i.e. the North-West Frontier), K(ashmir), I(ran), S(ind), T(urkharistan), A(fghanistan) and (Baluchista)N. It also meant, according to its inventor, ‘the land of the paks – the spiritually pure and clean’.

The earliest explanations word is explained in the marsh or flake derivatives, but the more recent interpretations that it is a loan word . The loan one possible source kantabaltin countries have shown (meaning 'Region', 'regional', 'power to the circuit') word for zeme, which also names Häme and Sami would come from. Another explanation is that the word was borrowed from the Indo-European people from the word (meaning 'people', 'nation'), in which case it would be the same root as, for example, Latin, gay, man.

An exonym is a name for a people or a land that was given to them by another people - not the people themselves. Thus the Germans can't have an exonym for themselves or their own country. I think Deutschland and its related terms are very appropriate because there were a wide variety of different Germanic, Slavic and Romance peoples living in the lands of what is now Germany. There was no national identity, but still a movement for unification. People used to identify with Swabia, Schaumburg, Waldeck and all those other tiny lands but they formed a large unified country out of that.

We just didn't have a name for the whole archipelago. The first ones to name the whole place were the Imperial Chinese. Called it 麻逸 (Ma-i).

Finns was originally a term for Uralic hunter-gatherer peoples in Scandinavia, directly adjacent to the Germanic peoples there.
>he earliest mentions of this kind are usually interpreted to have meant Fennoscandian hunter-gatherers whose closest successors in modern terms would be the Sami people.[26] It has been suggested that this non-Uralic ethnonym is of Germanic language origin and related to such words as finthan (Old High German) 'find', 'notice'; fanthian (Old High German) 'check', 'try'; and fendo (Old High German) and vende (Old Middle German) 'pedestrian', 'wanderer'.[27]

While the provinces' delegates spent little time, if any, in settling on 'Canada' as the name for the new country, others proposed a variety of other names:

Anglia – the medieval Latin name for England
Albionoria – "Albion of the north"
Borealia – from 'borealis', the Latin word for 'northern'; compare with Australia
Cabotia – in honour of Italian explorer John Cabot, who explored the eastern coast of Canada for England
Colonia
Efisga – an acronym of "English, French, Irish, Scottish, German, Aboriginal"
Hochelaga – an old name for Montreal
Laurentia
Mesopelagia – "land between the seas"
New Albion
Norland
Superior
Tupona – derived from 'The United Provinces of North America'
Transatlantica
Ursalia – "place of bears"
Vesperia – "land of the evening star"
Victorialand – in honour of Queen Victoria

Nope, they only adopted that as the short name. The official name in English still is the Czech Republic.
>>
>>1711696
Well, there never really was "good old Bohemia and Moravia" in the Czech language. The Czech name for the country has always been the same, or rather has always been some variation of "Czech" ("Čech") as the root. "Bohemian" as a distinct word from "Czech" has never existed in the Czech language. The concept, of course, has – the historical land of Bohemia x the entire kingdom/republic – but, again, with both words sharing the same "Čech" root.

>Except it was Reza Shah who went with Iran as the international name, because it ran with the Aryan theme. The Germans supported the motion at the League of Nations iirc.

Literally my point. Iran only sounds bad to people because the islamic republic tainted the word, Reza wanted to change it because in his times it was Persia the one with a stigma as it was associated with all that was stereotypically bad in the middle east.

Because it referred the territory before the snow mongols showed up. Actyally, Sami used to live further south. Scandis only moved north in the 1600s or so, and pushed them to the extreme north. I think Finns have been around current location for almost 2000 years, but Sami used to live further south there too.

This is ridiculous though.
Anatolia was never the name of the country, it's the name of the region that the country is primarily located on. And Turkey isn't a name they gave themselves, it's an exonym.

Hungary is an exonym, the Hungarians call themselves Magyars.

Formosa was the name of the island, not the name of the country (since there was no independent country there at all until very recently)

The country has always been called Mueng Thai (meaning Thailand or Freeland) by the natives, it's not a new name.

Netherlands is better than United Provinces.

The country has always been called Iran by the natives, it's not a new name.

Rhodesia comes from Cecil Rhodes, it's not a new name. It may sound better than Zimbabwe, but its fairly obvious why the didn't want to name their country after the people who colonized them after their revolution.

Argentina is better than United Provinces of South America. The name also comes only from silver (argentum in latin), with ina as a suffix to make it sound more Spanish. There is no tin.

Scotland is also an exonym, like Turkey and Hungary, only now that the primary language there is English the people call themselves Scots.
>>
>>1721907
My bad, Turkey is not an exonym. However, the name of the bird comes from the name of the country. When the Europeans first encountered turkeys, they thought they looked similar to a type of bird commonly imported from Asia to Europe (through the Ottoman or Turkish empire), so they became known as Turkeys.

>The United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, earlier known as the United Provinces of South America, a union of provinces in the Río de la Plata region of South America, emerged from the May Revolution in 1810 and the Argentine War of Independence of 1810–1818. It comprised most of the former Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata dependencies and had Buenos Aires as its capital.

A lot less than you'd think. The Belgians focussed exclusively on resource extraction and ran it with colonial officers. Most of it was focussed on only a few cities, far apart (Congo is fucking huge, btw). Not many natives involved at the high levels. After independence, most Europeans left.

Imagine your entire company is run with Microsoft, and Microsoft-certified IT drones. Then suddenly you decide, you know what? You're sick of Microsofts management and all the other strings attached, so you tell them "We're doing this our way now, bros". But Microsoft is pissed and says "yea nah cunts -- you want continued service, it will cost you 50% of your gross profits straight up, plus import and service charges". You have maybe a handful of people left who were familiar with computers and IT, but they fancied themselves cream of the crop Microsoft fanboys and decided to go back to HQ in Brussels. The rest of your employees can barely read and are more interested in which severed gorilla palm is most magically powerful.

How do you think your company is going to fare?

And to make it more interesting, the CIA assassinates your most charismatic new CEO, because he was thinking of asking Apple to help after Microsoft snubbed them.

Welcome to post-colonial Africa.

Colombia/Columbia is an arbitrary spelling difference in two different languages.

Actually the name comes from a later-invented personified Goddess of the Americas: Columbia/Colombia. This kind of neo-classical romanticism was popular in the 1800s. See: Britannia, Europa, Marianne, Germania, Helvetia, Vašek, Zealandia, Lady Liberty, Bharat Mata (Mother India), etc.

Indeed... It would be like when people refer to the Netherlands as Holland, even though Holland is only one part of the Netherlands (albeit the most populous part).

Bohemia and Moravia are both full of Czech speakers, but belonged to different political entities (HRE and Austro-Hungarian Empire) for most of their histories... They weren't united until 1918.

Czechia sounds a little funny to English ears, but it's the best name there is.

bohemia and moravia were united - in as much as two entities could be before the modern concept of a state - for literally like 99 percent of their history under the bohemian crown
