Just a simple question:
Weren't ancient, medieval, renaissance etc. armors not rust-proof?
This would greatly change the look of crusader armies, just imagine, thousands of men wearing rusty chainmails and plate armors?
Or am I wrong and their armors were rust proof?

They weren't rustproof, nothing is completely rustproof.
They were, however, cared for, because their wearers generally weren't complete idiots, and were oiled and scoured as needed.
Of course. Why, how else would we have copies of them to testament their appearance?
Why didn't they just rub lard on their armor and put it in the oven?
No, you're right, they could get rusty
>would greatly change the look of crusader armies, just imagine, thousands of men wearing rusty chainmails and plate armors
This is fucking stupid though. What reason do you have for thinking that soldiers wouldn't maintain their armor?
>>1706394
very low morale, that could happen during crusades or other missions that didn't went right.
>>1706253
Everything is rustproof if you're not a lazy piece of shit, anon.
>>1706399
MUH MORALE
It's their personal fucking armor. They're going to maintain it because it cost them a lot of money and they'll likely die if they let the rust compromise it.

99% of the time a soldier on campaign isn't fighting. Why would they let their armor rust? They'd have plenty of time to clean it. If morale is low they might abandon their force or break during a battle but it's no reason to not take care of their armor. If they have low morale in the first place they're probably scared of dying, and rusty armor won't exactly help with that.
I remember there being a donald duck comic where they found some isolated knights in a jungle who had to resort to using bronze equipment since iron and steel rusted

iron doesn't rust that quickly, especially with maintenance.
Disney comics aren't exactly great sources for information

Having rusted armor was equivalent modern day driving a rusted-over car. Sure, it was possible, but people didn't look at you in a favorable way.
There were plenty of ways to prevent rusting. The post popular were polishing and blackening. Polished armor looked great but was expensive as fuck, so poorer people settled with blackening. People who wore blackened armor were often driven by their poverty to pick up various questionable employments, ranging from being sellswords up to plain banditry. This is the etymological source of phrases such as "black knight" and "black character".

literal high-schooler drivel posing as historical analysis
>>1706399
It doesnt matter if their morale is low. Armor was 100% of their net worth, they are taking care of it.
OK, OP here, thanks for clearing this out.
Pure curiosity really.
This is why you had a page boy, to polish your armor

Are you that British armourer/restorer anon? If so, even though you're probably bored to tears of it, I think it's cool. If not, then that anon has a cool job. Thanks for the knowledge in any case.
>>1706399
that's the most retarded thing i've ever heard
they had to sell the family house to buy this armour and fight for their god and you think they'll stop maintaining it?
>>1707846
this statement is correct.
Slap some paint on it.
It prevents rust ,stylish(if you can paint), and helps with troop identification.
>>1706253
They took care of it obviously holy shit what a retarded thing to ask
