That's because in America, "Christian" was basically turned into a political title in the 1970s. Before that, the various denominations in the country weren't particularly united and didn't have a common identity. In the wake of the civil rights movement and Roe vs. Wade, politicians and religious leaders made a move to unite Christians through politics. It wasn't about faith, it was about uniting a portion of the country that could be persuaded to vote a certain way based on values they could say were held by this community. And it worked. Now they way most people in the US use the term, they basically used it to mean a political affiliation, and those things are exactly what matter most in the context.
