I've read about it. It was less an issue about commercial fees than different culture or really wanting to break away. It seems that it was also a time in which Brazil was fragile because their Emperor hadn't come of age and the country was ruled by a regency council. All in all, considering the size of the country and the fact that the rest os South America balkanized, I say they have a very strong national identity and the term "blob" can't be used.

From what I learned in school and read in libraries, and my knowledge in general, the south of brazil has a much more muh european heritage ideology. it was because of trade of course but mostly because their culture. most of them are germans, they have their own clothing, even the landscapes are different (meadows and grasslands instead of brazilian jungles).
Other forms of separatism also occur elsewhere. In São Paulo, most of the population is japanese and north italian. they have much more of a british like culture (coffee as tea, railways, modern and developed cities, etc) as opposed to the samba and race mixing of the rest of the country.

other forms of separatism involve the brazilian equivalent of black lives matter (brown) and the northeasterners who believe they are midwest cowboys.

Not really. The economy has been a mess for decades and many people continue to live in lawless areas with essentially no state presence. Sure, it has had its moments of greatness, but compared even to its neighbors its lacking in many regards.

It's already suffering from a lot of the perils of a post-industrial economy while still having regions that are totally destitute in every sense.
