Kings going into battle was common until the XVI century. Afterwards it ceased to be a thing although there were some notable exceptions, like Gustav Adolph, who got KIA for being that autistic. Occasionally some kings would accompany their armies and be present at battles, although from a safe distance and ofc not personally engaging in combat.
