That wasn't actual communism

You can certainly get rid of the elite class, and you can certainly put a framework in place that would prevent anyone from amassing wealth and power, but a central problem with this is that wealth is an incredible motivator, and people will always seek out avenues of power over others.
Even if you get rid of personal property, people will hoard information, people will trade in loyalties and dependency, people will exert force against each other to establish dominance. With no money, no possessions, and a vetting system that somehow magically destroys any symbols of status in a group, the aspiring will still scratch and claw their way to the top to rule
This is why so many people believe in capitalism and free market societies over any form of communism. When you take a fatalistic stance about the elites ALWAYS existing, it is better to form a framework in which the elites must compete in service to the populous. You get filthy rich by offering a product no one else can, at a price no one can beat. Obviously there still exists a ruling class of political leeches out of view of the public, and those who inherit wealth and power only to misuse it, but the idea that by one's self, one can rise into the elites and out of your current master's sphere of influence is an incredibly motivating thought, and enough to satisfy a hell of a lot more people than "work for the good of your country, for the good of your fellow laborers"

Market socialism. Marx doesn't even like the bourgeois idea of equality. Just make it so that wealth is conferred by the collective decision making of society and not by property rights. A popularity contest about what a capitalist pig can do for you is a bit better than a capitalist pig figuring out how to exploit you because he owns his wealth by legal right.

Stop this. The OP was clearly meant "communism" as in the ideaology that pursues the communist ideal, not the communist ideal itself.
I don't know why I keep taking this bait.

Not real communism mein comrade.

The soviet union wasn't communist and never claimed to be. It was socialist, with communism being it's end goal. Socialism does not pretend to be democratic, that is not it's purpose. Educate yourself.
