Why does /his/ never talk about Ibn Khaldun? He's literally the father of modern historiography.

He wrote an autobiography, which seems to be the most comprehensive source on him as a person. I'm really more interested in his theory of history, where a group of barbarians becomes a dominant power, gets lazy, and then gets overthrown by a new group of barbarians. It seems to hold up for most of history, but I'm not sure if that's true in the 20th century, because regions of the world aren't as distinct from each other.

You can view 19th century European nationalism as a sort of asabiyyah that was severely damaged by both World Wars and later by the social revolutions of the 1960's.
The most successful countries in the 21st century will be those that are nationalistic enough to advance themselves and pursue their self-interest while avoiding unnecessarily destructive wars or apathy.
