I've spent several months in Vietnam and I'm martried to a Vietnamese girl straight from the mother country, and here's what I've gathered about Vietnam:

They are generaly not hurting, though the common man lives in a small house/apartment and work long hours for little money (that is true for most of asia). Their concerns are not affording food and such (they aren't generally that poor), but affording a good education first and foremost, and affording to take care of their parents when they age because of no social care from the government (no pension and so on). They hate China with a passion.

Anyway, they don't seem immediately worse off than the Thais ()the thais outside of Bangkok, that is).
