Republic is just a generic term for a state that isn't a monarchy or other form of autocracy really. It's not like there's any special mystique about being a republic. Rome called itself a republic for centuries even as its effective government radically changed over that period of time. Venice called itself a republic for like 900 years despite being ruled by oligarchical aristocratic families.
