Just curious, how is the War of 1812 taught in American schools? In Canada it's taught that they defended their land..that's about it really

>British were impressing American merchant sailors into the British Navy to fight Napoleon
>We had enough and declared war
>got our capital burned
>in 1814 we took a little trip, along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip', we took a little bacon and we took a little beans and we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans
That's about it really.
I don't remember learning anything about it in school

My favorite part of the story is that the battle happened after the war was already over. The treaty of Ghent was signed and hostilities officially ceased but word hadn't made its way back to the American continent yet.

Not him, but it's also probably that they'd face severe disciplinary action, possibly even execution, playing dead, it was considered a form of cowardice in the British handbook.
Being an American PoW probably beat going back to your officers and them finding out you were playing dead.
