What's a good source for learning about music?
I'd like to learn more about the theory behind it, so I can have a richer listening experience and understand what I like about a certain piece rather than "it sounds good".
Also, a history of music would be appreciated, say an encyclopedia of the various genres/movements.
Not asking on /mu/, they're mostly idiots and I think discussion will be (at least by 4chan standards) good here.
i don't think music theory will give you the answers you are looking for. unless you are a musician, studying music theory is pointless. i think you should instead study music psychology

Look up the musicians that you like on wikipedia and other websites and find out about their history and lives. It is very interesting and entertaining. I love reading about the things going on in a musician's head when they wrote a certain song etc.
