Were leather gauntlets or thick gloves common in ancient/medieval armies, or is it just a reenactorism?

Yes
Isabella and Ferdinand wrote about Beltran de la Cueva and his autistic fascination with collecting left handed leather gauntlets

Isn't that well after the use of metal plate gauntlets? What about Viking age etc. stuff?

Well, only a few decades before Alvaro de Luna wrote about his need for leather cuirass for his soldiers

In Europe in battle no. Before 1000AD you would use a bossed sheild which could protect both hands and wouldn't fit large gloves. After about 1000-1100 men-at-arms would use metal gauntlets in they could afford them.
For training or in sport with blunt edges they might use leather.

To switch sides and argue the other point then, what about the few pieces of mail presumed to be used for handguards (occasionally accompanied by splinted vambraces) such as in Valsgardë 8 that only protect the sword arm?
