As someone born in the 90's, what were the eighties like? I get the impression that it was pretty awesome, or is 80's media lying to me?

Mostly going to work to pay bills.
Culturally it was the same old shit, different faces.
No internet though, that's a big enough difference I guess. You couldn't instantly find out about everything, you might have to actually find a book or newspaper to look it up. Not really any cellphones yet either, people had the home phone that you had to have a list of phone numbers in a book or remember them. Not any on-demand media, you had to be home in front of the TV to watch the news or a show.

Rose colored glasses, nostalgia. A few interesting world events happened, a few musicians made a few cool songs, a few awesome movies were made, etc.
All this is condensed and the enormous piles of shit and daily grind relevant to every generation are filtered out of memory for the most part.
