First king of Portugal was from France and had a red beard IIRC, whereas Portuguese natives are black-as-night Arab Muslims.

And Charles II did chose a french prince as his heir. But then Louis XIV managed to alienate everysingle European power against his grandson.

Obviously neither Austrians nor the English wanted to cede Spain to a relative of Louis XIV while Louis XIV has already been a force of nature all his life. Spanish succession war would haven't had happened if there was a Habsburg for the throne.

Gain Portugal with another one (and arms)
If Phillip II got Mary pregnant, you could add England to that.

Then, later they decided that only Capetians and other Habsburgs were high status enough to marry their heirs. Not that the Capetians were any different, since they usually married Habsburgs (Louis XIV's mother and wife were Habsburgs).

His fame aside, Charles V was not particularly inbred, if you look at his genealogical tree.

It's really the Spanish Habsburgs that went full retard. Austrians weren't that inbred, they had cousin marriages here and there but significant amount of new blood as well.
