"If it wasn't for the wall, there would have been a war."
- Heinz Keßler, Fritz Streletz, former high ranking members NVA of GDR
What does /his/ think about this particular statement and about the "iron curtain" in general?
The Berlin Wall was needed to keep fascist and revisionist tendencies from the West out of the newly created workers and peasants state.

Wall sucked for the Germans but it was great for us. Solve the problem of control over Berlin that had risked war so many times prior and it was a hell of a PR coup that the Soviets had to build a wall to keep their worker's paradise from hemorrhaging workers.

The DDR would have collapsed without the Wall. Everyone and their grandmother fled to west germany, especially qualified people. The SU needed a functioning DDR to provide the military logistics for their Elite troops. Divided germany also worked as a showcase of the systems. A collapse of the socialist germany would have been a massive loss of prestige for the eastern bloc. So it was one of two things:
1. Find a way too stop the migration
2. Solve the Berlin crisis with military means/ enforce german unification (with military force)
The Wall provided enough stability for the DDR so that it could decay naturally like the rest of the eastern bloc.

He was clearly talking about a civil war within eastern Germany between the people who want freedom and higher living standards and the ruling class of communist kleptocrats

5% votes isn't that interesting. That means only 2-3% of the population of East Germany voted for that party.

No he wasn't. With soviet troops stationed there a "civil war" wasn't going to happen. There weren't even enough regime loyalists to start a civil war in the first place. Apart from the stasi, the party, borderguards and a tiny majority of the people there would have been no one willing to defend the regime after 51. Hell even a lot of socialists/ communists were opposed to the SED. Essentially they were soviet sock puppets.
