So how similar was "boot camp" or training in ancient Rome to the modern idea of it? I always was curious about this. How long did they train them? Would they scream and mind fuck them? Has there been any real change in the basics of training soldiers in the western world?
It was probably more like: Ypu are now this legionnaire's bitch and he has to teach you right or his Centurion will get on his ass. Oh and you fight in front because you're not as valuable
Show me your war face /his/!
Pretty sure that for most human history if you were a soldier your superiors could beat the fuck out of you, even rape or kill you for any reason they wanted.
Your reward for putting up with this is that if you sacked a city you got to pillage and rape civilians :D

I remember reading that the legion was pretty fucking harsh on fags under arms. As in, you can fuck all the catamites you want, but fuck a brother legionary and we'll hang you.
I read a book on the average life in a Roman legion once from the start of their career to the end, I wish I remembered it. Pic related has a small chapter on it but it's kinda shit and not very detailed, still here's some of what it says:
"The legionary’s training officer was his optio, who ensured that his men trained and exercised. The Roman soldier’s sword training involved long hours at wooden posts... Apart from route marches, legionaries, from the time of the consul Marius, were also trained to run considerable distances carrying full equipment. In addition, the legionary learned defensive and offensive techniques, and to rally round his unit’s standard, or any standard in an emergency."

That's one of those shitty B&N bargain history books, isn't it? They have a whole series that looks like those for all the meme warriors like Vikings and Samurai and shit.
