i remember playing some RTS games back in my childhood and there were these drummer units that were supposed to boost up the morale
was this actually a thing in real wars?
what did their music sound like? i can't find anything on youtube

I might be wrong but I belive that it did, much like the eagle and colours did. However in musket warfare instrumental sounds were more often used to signal commands

Not sure, but the drums and trumpets were used to give orders, like charge, or (specific) march, etc.

Yes, although morale had nothing to do with it. They existed to quickly relay orders via musical cues.
What game was it op?
I remember playing a similar game and I have been looking for it ever since.

don't remember

It was less "nice music, I feel good listening to it" and more of a way to make sure people marched in step or to relay orders.
But they were used and were very important.
Yes of course. The drum helps in keeping a formation of hundreds of men in order. Drums and music have been a part of war right until modern warfare.

Music was used to command troops. Each unit had it's own bugle call. And there were specific calls for attack, withdraw, regroup around the banner, etc. Drums were also for setting the marching pace.
